humans are still evolving...

So we should sit back and wait to die off?
Are you being purposefully dense, rude, or do you have trouble paying attention?

Where exactly did anyway say anything like that?

Using appropriate technology to fix current problems is totally different from invoking magical futuristic cures.

Saying nannites will fix our health does nothing about our health now and essentially says that if we sit on our hands and ignore our problems that somehow they will be fixed for us.
Saying that we can just "genetically engineer" bees shows not only ignorance of the issues involved with the bee problem, but ignorance how and why genetic engineering works and it's limitations.

Just because someone doesn't think that technology will magically make things better doesn't mean that they are anti-technology or that they just want to "sit on their hands".

I would say colonizing space and allows humans to expand IS the answer.

I would argue that that is possibly the single greatest means of ensuring survival of the human species.
Nice dream... but it does nothing to help us here and now from the far more immediate concerns that threaten our survival in the next few decades.

So this is the mindset of the herd. I was curious as to why the human race advances so slowly but at least I now have my answer.

Maybe it is best for humans to simply disappear.

So you know painted, the reason I do what I do is because I don't accept it. The reason people like me do what we do is because we don't accept it. Nothing has ever been accomplished by saying it cannot.

Nothing I have said here is outside of capability with sufficient knowledge, and it's people willing to explore that knowledge that makes it possible.

You have your short term way of dealing with our future, I'm making sure we live past that. We both have our ways but for you to say what I do is invalid is about as deep of an insult as it gets.

I'm not sure why you think PW is saying she thinks we cannot, in the future and with enough advancement in knowledge, do any of the things we've discussed in this thread, either in biology or space exploration. Theoretically anything is possible within the laws of the universe, right?

People willing to explore, people willing to dream and work on projects like our space program, or genetic engineering, are what gives me hope for humanity. PW and I are both saying that we can't just be pie in the sky in our thinking - if we don't fix the problems we face right now, in the short term, there will be no long term.

I wish I could live to see the day where all we all like like Star Trek, problems of sustainability solved and we all spend our days learning and exploring the universe.

Especially if Capt. Picard is there. Yeowrrrr!

It is only as far off as people let it be.

There is room for both short term and long term... you can't reach your long term goal without my "short time" ones.

Dismissing short term problems doesn't make them go away... nor does simply assuming that a single "simple" fix is possible mean that it will or can happen.

Idealism is great, but realism is better. Your idealistic goals are great, but you still need to set realistic short term goals to get there.

Your goals are valid (and I highly encourage them, keep up the good work!)... but simply saying they are the answer is not. You can't show me nannites now, you can show me a lot of theoretical and foundational work, but say that we can rely on nannites to heal us when we don't have them is not a valid answer to what to do about the problem of MSRA's right now.

I hope you can make your work a reality... but right here and right now we need to discuss immediate actions to give you the time you need. The situation for our species in the immediate future is looking increasingly grave.

I agree, I'm glad you didn't confuse my statement with being unappreciative of the work of those who solve short term, as I do. I wouldn't be able to do what I do. But you applied it to long term and it all went out the door at that moment.

I guess it works the other way around though, applying long term goals to the short term may not work so well.

I said if we don't fix our problems now we won't get to the long term.

I guess it works the other way around though, applying long term goals to the short term may not work so well.
Exactly... invoking nannites to fix our problem with MRSA's right now won't work. We simply don't have nannites yet and the problem is of immediate concern.

It may help my grandchildren, but it doesn't help my son.

... including some options that migh be considered downright rude. Way too risky. I think it far better that we focus on simply modifying the bee's genetic structure.
