Mind you, I live in a part of the country where deer hunting is still legal.
On top of that, there are a few butchers who will take a tagged deer, process it, and give it to the local food banks.

Is taking joy in death and the harm of other living creatures unethical? I think so. Is hunting itself unethical? No, I don't think so. For a number of reasons.

That's a pretty big generalization imo. There are plenty of examples of hunting in both stationary and nomadic tribal groups which was for contest, for ascension to manhood ceremonies, and for decoration. That they don't often waste the meat doesn't change the motive is not always for the meat. Lots of modern trophy hunters don't waste the meat either, especially valuable meats like elk, bear, alligator, etc.

Hunting is ethical so long as you plan to use as many parts of the animal as you can, but hunting just to put a head on the wall and mindlessly throwing the body away without a thought is wasteful and is disrespectful towards the animal.

If the hunt follows regulations to avoid over-hunting, and if the meat is eaten and other parts used however possible, then I consider hunting ethical. If someone enjoys the challenge, the technical aspects, the adrenaline of the hunt, or whatever, then fine.

Going out to cause death and likely a degree of suffering to an animal purely for enjoyment with no plan to use the meat is not something I consider ethical. And that's not really a person I'd like to hang out with.

Perhaps it wouldn't be ethical if it were only for the joy of the kill.

When I lived with my grandpa a few years back, we would hunt pheasants, quail, deer and turkey whenever we could.
Hunting is one of very few activities I feel is fun, due mainly to the adrenaline rush.

Hi Folks..

Many seem to misunderstand the thread premise - NOT about hunting to FEED the self - but hunting for the JOY of killing...

If there is such a joy..??....Seriously - does ANYBODY here think it is pleasurable to kill for sport..??...

Personally Ive only ever had to kill just one time - a cat - and it was an act of mercy not joy - and having done that act I know for sure there is no way would my Soul take ANY pleasure ANY TIME from taking a life - there is no "joy" in that act.... People who hunt and kill for sport are DESPICABLE - evil - no other way to describe it..

Any such hunters here..?.... if there are - then how about I give you half hour head start - then I come for YOU - yes..??....Sound fair and acceptable..??.. I chase YOU for a while - get you all panicky and scared witless - then I close in and murder you IN COLD BLOOD - look you right in the eye so you know whats coming - to prove MY "superiority - my, "manliness" lol - my "right to dominate" - and show you in that moment just before I end your sad pathetic life just what a true FOOL you really are !!

Hunting for the "joy" of the kill indeed - I would show them the complete error of their ways - and not for MY sport or personal satisfaction - but simply to protect the INNOCENT and to rid the world of one less evil..

Hunting for food is far more noble than going to the grocery and buying a hunk of cow. I own a lot of guns and have a lot of friends that hunt, I live in the Mountains of Ea Tn so its a natural thing here. I have been a meat eater all m fairly long life but recently my conscious has been troubling me, and I mean bad. So I eat dairy and very little meat. Hunting just to kill is wrong in my universe.

You know, I think that anything imbued with life should be respected. Based upon the evolutionary argument we're all animals. So why would we make a sport out of killing those from whence we came? If you are going to eat meat kill the animal humanely. That's my two cents.

You mean trophy or sport hunting? I think that's disgusting, personally. Humans are animals, predators at that, and we do get a primal rush out of killing things, but I think there should be a greater purpose beyond that when hunting.

This is how I see it.
Getting a primal rush out of culling is one thing. Especially if you are going to feed someone.

Trophy hunting for sport is something else entirely. The world is running out of lions and elk and polar bear. That's completely different.

I hope that dentist's car is regularly vandalized.

Bear meat is good, the best breakfast sausage I ever had was made from brown bear and it was shot with a bow (not mine though, a friends). From what I understand many of the animals killed on safaris in Africa are donated to help feed the hungry, we also have programs like this in the U.S. .

Bear meat is good, the best breakfast sausage I ever had was made from brown bear and it was shot with a bow (not mine though, a friends).

Brown bear are one of those inbetween species. Not as endangered as some, but nothing like deer in Indiana. We have to kill those or they will trash the vegetation. Top predators, like tigers and jaguars are something else.

I would have bet this would happen. In fact, it illustrates what happens with a lot of threads. People go off on irrelevant tangents. Not to address a new subject, but in belief they're talking abut the original issue. There's gotta be a term for this kind of disconnect. Any of you curbside psychologists know of a name for it?
