"I Heard You Mormons...."

DeepShadow

White Crow
"...worship a version of Jesus who captains a starship Galactica, along with his twin brother Lucifer."

"...can't eat food that's been cooked on Teflon."

"...think non-whites who accept Christ will turn white."

"...can't drive cars. (i.e. If I join your church, do I have to sell my car and ride a bike everywhere?)"

"...have horns (or tails)."

"...think that only Americans will go to heaven."

"...think black people are devils."

"...have to stay away from the ocean."

I've heard all these. How about all of you? Care to add to the list? This thread isn't for resolving these ideas, only collecting them. It's supposed to be funny, if perhaps a little sad. Anyway, anyone care to add to my collection?

Wait, almost forgot one because it didn't fit the format:

"I heard Joseph Smith made a prophecy about tree-men walking around on the sun."

Luckily, I haven't heard all of those that you listed, but I have heard these ones (mostly in high school).

"...believe that the lost 10 tribes were taken into space by aliens."

"...don't believe in using electricity."

"...sacrifice children/animals in your temples."

"...have moons and stars all over your underwear."

"...don't celebrate Christmas."

I've also heard the horn one before. My mom's teacher in high school actually told their class the Mormons have horns. Whenever I asked people where my horns were they told me that we file them down.

I do not think this thread needs to resolve these rumours either but I would be interested in knowing their origins. Besides ignorance, what would lead people to conclude such things?

Yes. I have a friend (met her on the internet) who is a black convert to the Church. She isn't the only black Mormon I have met, but the only one I know well. And then, of course, Gladys Knight, is LDS.

I have had three black roommates - all of them Mormon. I have one right now. I also have some good friends who are black and Mormon. I can think of at least six off the top of my head. It is too bad that I can count them though.

Gladys Knight it probably the most famous black Mormon. She is doing a lot for diversity in the church. Here is a website with a choir that she started in the church to promote diversity. I love this devotional that she gave at BYU: http://www.suvchoir.org/specialmessagene.html

Here are a few additions to your list DeepShadow...

Mormon women can't wear make-up.
Mormon women must wear dresses and white nylons.
Mormon men and women believe they should have seven children (not just large families, but specifically seven children).
Mormons are a lot like the Amish.
Mormon wedding ceremonies are three-hours long.

I think that ignorance, and perhaps fear of the unknown, pretty much sums it up.

I've heard that "Mormon girls are molested during their baptisms". I forget who said that, but I thought that was funny as hell. people believe some pretty stupid things.

All of the Amish, no cars, no electricity ones probably come from people getting church history (the pioneers) and church doctrine confused. Also, there are those sects that live out in the desert that still dress like pioneers.

The temple ones probably come because the temple is a mystery. People make up stories about stuff they don't understand.

Some of them probably come from other churches unfortunately. There is a video that was shown in many churches (lots of my friends saw it) that showed LDS children singing the song "Popcorn Popping on the Apricot Tree." It is a song about spring and there are some hand motions to go with it. The video took out the music, showed the children doing the actions, and said that the church was teaching them how to make worlds.

[edit] I've never seen the video myself, but that is what I've been told. I may be spreading a Mormon myth myself. :) [/edit]

That's weird. But I think that's better than leaving the music in and telling people mormons think popcorn grows on apricot trees! :biglaugh:

I Know that no one is 'abusing' the system (as yet) but this is a "discuss individual religions forum" which means that you may ask questions. Please can we remember that before someone posts 'something out of bounds'

I haven't seen it, but I have heard that in the French translation of the movie "Witness" -- you know, where the Amish kid saw a crime and a police officer has to act Amish to protect him -- the word Amish was translated as Mormon.

Wow! In front of their families, huh? Yup, people do! :D

The cake is a lie
This isn't really an "I heard" thing, but the last time a Mormon pair came down our road going door-to-door, my grandma called me up and said "Jenna, lock the doors... there are Mormons going down the road!"

I said a few placating things, kept the door unlocked, and kept watching TV. A couple stopped by after a while, asked if I had any time, and when I said no (a lie, but I really wasn't in the mood for anything religious at the moment) they complimented me on how pretty Leo (my golden-capped conure) was and left.

Any group that can recognize the beauty known as conures has got to be a good lot. :D

I find it sad that the LDS members are even able to make out a thread like this.
I know there is some hate around especially in Northen Ireland between protestants and Catholics.
But the stuff you have put up with must be realy hateful to you all.
God loves you and your detractors, Its just had to understand sometimes.
