I quit smoking today.

Oh yeah, after a week the nicotene is out of your system and there is no more physical craving, its all mental then. And its truly amazing how the mind plays tricks on you, making you think the body actually needs this. But now that you aren't medicating the problem you can actually feel how bad it was hurting your body! Good show, dude! Keep it going, it will only get better! Concentrate on the benefits and not the bad, short term stuff.
Imagine being able to run up stairs without falling down, out of breath!

I made it! This is day eight for me now. I cough more now than I did when I smoked. This is supposed to be normal. My body is getting rid of the crap in my lungs. I guess once this happens, I will start to feel better.
Hang in there, man, it'll begin to get easier from here on out. One more week, especially, will help. Believe it or not, after about two weeks smoke free, you'll begin to forget about the damn things for short periods of time. And as each week passes, you'll forget about them more and more. Believe it or not, one day soon you'll realize that an entire day has passed and you never once thought about a cigarette.

A real important key, at least it was for me, was to not to let yourself re-negotiate the decision to quit. Force yourself to accept that the decision has already been made and the deed is already done. You are now and forever a NON-SMOKER. All you're doing at the moment is putting up with the temporary discomfort of getting your body used to this change. That discomfort will soon pass and that will be that.

Congratulations!

Whew! I am so glad to hear from you. It's been several days, and I was starting to get worried! Keep up the good work. The theists are praying for you and the atheists are rooting from the sidelines!

I have wanted to quit smoking for some time now. I am getting older and realize that I can live a whole lot longer living smoke free. I got up this morning and decided I am not going to smoke any longer. I have made it all day without a smoke. Each day will be a little easier I hope.

Good show. I quit as well. Been about 5 weeks now. It does get easier. Keep it up.

Can't brain. Has dumb.
Grats on day 10!

I used to smoke a hell of a lot.

But one day just decided I couldn't be bothered with it anymore.

Now I only occasionally have a smoke. I go through a pack of 20 every 6 months or so.

So keep it up - keep yourself busy with other things and what I found great was throwing in changes in your routine. Many times you will have smoked out of routine - breakfast, smoke, drive to work, smoke, start work, break/smoke, work, lunch/smoke, work, drive home/smoke, mow the lawns, smoke, dinner, smoke, tv, smoke - and each day would have a similar routine, so change the routine, and it may help you stop smoking.

Depends Upon My Mood..
Also for more encouragement..there are new studies out now linking smoking to memory problems...So just one more benefit to quitting you may not have been aware of..a sharper mind...

Having never smoked, what do I know? Not much. But this concerns me a little. Don't some people think just smoking once in a while won't hurt, and then end up right back to smoking full time? It works for you, methylated, but it might not work for Rick. Again, I really have no experience in this.
I would just hate to see him fail.

The rest of your advice was very good.:)

I think we should help him along with bribery :D. Every 10 days he goes with out smoking should frubal him.

I gave up in 1963 at age 30
The first 30 years were hardest.
Remember you are a recovering addict and you will be ok.

The "just this one" is not an option.

Like most addictions you are addicted to a personal hell; we actually gain nothing from smoking.
It is Just scratching a self inflicted itch.

Its funny you say the first 30 years were the hardest..My MIL quit in her 20's..She is in her 60's now..She says still do this day ..every blue moon she will crave one after eating a meal..And this woman HATES cigarrettes..

And you are absolutley correct on the warning of not falling for ratioanlizing with the "just this one" option..Both my husband and I fell for that..I quit for six weeks..convinced myself I could have a few at a social event..Since I wasnt 'addicted" any longer..and BOOM ...I was a smoker again..My husband..same thing after quitting for 4 months..He decided he could have one or two with his drinks..SLAM....picked it right back up to daily smoking..

He in fact just quit again..Its been several months..He still has cravings just not continuous..He goes through about a pack of gum a day..That seems to help with the "oral" need...

Being addicted to cigarretes is a living hell..You are right about that..Its so illogical. And we know full good and well its a killer..and just lowers your quality of life in so many ways...and we do it anyway..So there is also this sort of shame attached...Little kids even look at you like yor an idiot..

Not even to mention the guilt over the expense..You dont even want to add up how much money you have wasted over the years on them..Especially if you have two smokers in the house..Its just ...pathetic...

Im so happy for anyone that breaks free of it..

What makes people start in the first place? Years ago, it was understandable. But today? It's not even "cool" anymore . . . is it?
