An experienced shooter can tell if they are firing a round with or without a projectile (less recoil).
Therefore, IMO, issuing some members of a firing squad a blank makes no sense.

I am a little surprise that no one here has suggested that the firing squad could consist of robots.

An experienced shooter can tell if they are firing a round with or without a projectile (less recoil).
Therefore, IMO, issuing some members of a firing squad a blank makes no sense.
They would not know until after the fact. The worse thing that a shooter can do is to miss a vital organ that results in an immediate death and yet still hit the body. Then a shooting can become torture instead of an execution. Knowing that you may not have an actual bullet may ease the conscious enough to aim properly.
