If money is the root of all evil.............

Then why do most conservatives resist "sharing" it with the less fortunate? Isn't that what jesus did? All I see is that the Repubs in office hoarding more and more money for the rich, while they claim themselves as being religious at the same time. Oxymoron no?

I actually had this conversation with my roommate who is an extremely convservative fundamentalist christian. I asked him how he could be so stingy and against helping poor people when Jesus said to give up all possesions to get into heaven, and he said that Jesus only meant that for the guy he was talking to and not everyone else.

So basically they get around it by rationalizing.

It's not an oxymoron. Conservatives don't believe in Jesus.

You cant trust any politician.

I dont see it as a Oxymoron though, Jesus did teach to be generous, forgiving, and humble but I dont see it as the governments responsibility to force the rich to spread the wealth. The rich should do it on their own, not cause they are being forced by the law.

Yeah. Money in itself is not the problem; it's just always associated with greed, which is the real problem that aphorism is talking about.

It's not the only one, either. Lust destroys rationality, as well.

They're clearly protecting the poor from that evil money, carrying the burden like Frodo in LOTR. What heroes!

(Slightly) seriously though, it's the love of money which is meant to be the root of all evil so it's OK to keep it as long as you're not nice to it.

So when Jesus talked in general terms about how hard it is for a rich man to enter Heaven, your roommate thinks he was talking about one specific rich man? :sarcastic

Actually you can trust them - as long as you trust them to be politicians and don't expect them to abide by any legal or moral standards.
Reminds me of the fable of the Scorpion and the Frog.

It seems that only atheists & agnostics should be rich.
So, to all Xtians, I offer to relieve you of your burden of excess wealth.
I do this because I care.

Jesus preached that we should be caring and kind. Christians should be generous and help their fellow man, yes. The government though has no right to do it for us.

Also, I dont think Jesus meant all rich man cant get into heaven, it was supposed to be that the rich man has placed his heart more into the money than he had into his fellow man and god. Basically, it was a lesson on dont be greedy, not dont be rich.

I have noticed this, too. We have to keep in mind that just because a person goes to church on Sunday, wears his best there, etc, doesn't mean they truly practice their faith. It is a sad fact. We also have to keep in mind that Christians are humans, too, and can have the same flaws as anyone else. I am just glad I am not a conservative (although my husband is). ;) (I was being a bit facetious on that last comment, as it is pretty judgmental towards conservatives).

Agreeing with Honest Joe, the actual quote says the love of money is the root of evil.

As an ex-conservative I have a few thoughts on this:

Conservatives seem to generally feel that generosity is very good, but that it should be done individually or via non-governmental groups. If I recall correctly, a study somewhere at sometime showed that conservatives give either a higher percentage of money or more money on average than liberals. I forget which. And I'm too lazy to google it at the moment. I realize this is the equivalent of offering chocolate pudding cups as evidence. Okay, that's not even closely equivalent. But I'm staring at a pudding cup my cat knocked over, and I'm a little irritated at how far the pudding splattered, so you get to read the inane contents of my brain at 3:38 p.m. CT.

Of course, there are myriad problems with hoping people will be individually generous....but that's another discussion.

Isn't greed the root of money? Interesting.
Greed exists independently of money, which is merely a convenient medium of exchange. In fact, money is the root of all good,
for without it, you'd have to barter for everything.....the economy would grind to a halt, except for subsistence transactions.
Do you think I could pay my property taxes with limericks & smart-arsed remarks?
