An Iranian cleric has called on followers to “kill” an award-winning journalist and women’s rights campaigner after she challenged the country’s ban on women cycling.

Masih Alinejad, who lives in exile in the United States, posted a video to Twitter in which the unnamed cleric insisted she should be punished for apostasy – the rejection or renunciation of a religious faith.

“You’ve seen accursed Masih Alinejad and her insult to Saint Zeinab,” he said.

“How do you think we should punish this accursed hooligan?

“She should be punished for apostasy. This accursed person should be punished for apostasy.

“If no-one can kill her, she should at least lead an underground life.’

A total nutter, it's true, but this crazed cleric is seeking her punishment for 'apostasy'. Not much to do with cycling, really.... is it?

I've just read right through your link.
The cleric sure looks as if he could do with a good psychiatrist! :)

But Masih Alinejad is not worth taking too much notice of, imo.
She lives in the USA, a more secure situation than her family still living in Iran, and then she shouts her mouth off to the world, criticizing the Iranian government and Islam, knowing that this could (and has!) put her family members in to danger.

How's that for nil integrity, eh?

Your adhominem attack on Masih Alinejad does nothing to detract from the validity of the points she has raised with respect to women’s cycling.

No surprise here. Many of the muslim nations have nutters, some even in power. Islam has many cult leaders.

Islam in the Middle East and the far east still has to go through a Reformation, and that will only happen once those places grow economically and socially, as a lot of the nutters are a result of the ignorance in those communities.

Do you agree or disagree that women should be able to ride bicycles?

Sorry we've already had Salafism and ISIS, don't need more of that. What we actually need is for Islam to go back to it's roots instead of this Modernism it's been under in the past 200 years.
The Islam of 300 years ago was not the Islam following the fall of the Ottomans (despite their flaws).
And as for Shi'ism, well the Shi'ism of modern Iran is fake with no resemblance to the Gnostic tradition of historic Shi'ism. Babism (the occult movement that spawned the Baha'i's afterwards) basically killed Shi'ism and caused Shi'ites to start acting like Sunnis. If they accepted The Bab, then the mystical fire would have been lit. But instead they went the other way, and became basically just alternate-Sunnis, which is a parody of what Shi'ism actually was (again, Gnostic).

We need Islam to go back to the Sunnah and Ahlulbayt, that is what.

We don't need more reforms, the world is sick enough of terrorism. And Salafism has benefited nobody mate.

Of course I do. (EDIT: .... agree with women on bikes.)

But this person sat fairly safe in the USA, with relatives in an unsafe country, making large with the criticisms. Would you do that to your relatives?

2nd EDIT. !!! :-
Last July, secret police in Tehran arrested her brother, Alireza Alinejad and two siblings of her former husband, in what she described as “hostage taking.”
Ah...... so maybe she is not that much concerned, after all.

That's par for the course in that country, this is just another injustice in a long line, this from amnesty:

Anoosheh Ashoori, is serving a lengthy prison sentence after a grossly unfair trial that relied on torture-tainted “confessions” to convict him of “cooperating with a hostile state against the Islamic Republic” and obtaining “illicit funds”. He is being denied transfer to a dental facility outside prison for the specialized care he urgently needs.

They are, we don't need more of that. What you're asking to 'reform' is modernist (such as Iranian Shi'ism, reactionary to Babism; 180 degrees different to prior to Babism) and reformist (such as Salafi/Wahhabi Saudi) Islam, not classical (Sunnah/Ahlulbayt, and 11th century high-intellectual) Islam.

There's definitely a strong irony.

Is there a Law in Sharia to cut out the tongue of someone (e.g. clerics) when they endanger lives of innocent people? Muhammad forgot?

Looking into it a little further and Alinejad seems equally as strange, definitely a button pusher, she's not some anon.
Looks more or less like a weird facebook scandal. The fact that the linked article in the OP mentions Rushdie though pushes the potential 'seriousness' of the article into the realm of clear propaganda.

It's just hysterical and nothing more.

Oh yes.....
And also, Masih Alinejad is a Baha'i sympathiser who is pushing her reputation as a journalist as hard as possible. She doesn't seem to care for the safety of women in Iran when she exhorts them to caste off their hijabs, that's an incitement to commit acts which could put women in severe danger there.

Saudi Arabia ended the bicycle ban for women a couple of years back. Indonesia still bans women cyclists. But times are changing, and some european bans on women straddling bikes and scooters still existed in my lifetime and I still remember girls riding motorcycles side-saddle through Barcelona.

Let's give Iran time to drag itself in to the 21st century, but I don't take notice of careless journalists who are quite prepared to put women in Iran in danger with their dangerous suggestions.

But it sure does detract from her character.
She could not have cared for the safety of her relatives in Iran at all.
Considering that, apparently, for almost 20 years the Iranian government took no action against her family, why would she, or anyone else, that her family was at risk?

I have no idea, but I suspect neither do you, whether or not family members gave consent to any risk to themselves that her activities might cause.

Assuming that what Ms.Alinejab writes is the truth and it is important for that truth to be known - and that it is not that easy to find journalists who are orphans with no relatives, personal ties and/or pets who could be at risk from a repressive regime - how would you handle the situation?

You really think she does not know?
Exhorting Iranian women to caste off their hijabs looks great, until you realise what danger that can expose them to. She did that as well.

I've just answered this point. Above.

I wouldn't try to provoke women in Iran to ride bikes, nor caste off hijabs, nor do anything which could put them in danger, and I'm hoping that you would not, either. :)

It's Iran.
how would you handle the situation?
you could prioritise the problems and deal with them in the appropriate order:

a) political prisoners in Iran are tortured in ways too awful to describe (but you can find and read reports if you can handle it)
b) women are discouraged from riding bicycles.
not classical (Sunnah/Ahlulbayt, and 11th century high-intellectual) Islam.
What is classical about this?
