There is also the somewhat common experience of the God Dream which is any dream by anyone which claims to contain God or Jesus or perhaps some other (male?) focus of divinity. This experience comes with typical motifs which can be seen in both the experience of people today and in the stories in Genesis. The author(s) of Genesis knew of such experiences and crafted their stories around them. People today who have encountered God in a vision or dream can also attest to this type of experience.
This, of course, doesn't necessarily explain God's ultimate nature. For that we need our spiritually inspired story-tellers to come up with their inventions which have the deep benefit of helping us all to think about ourselves, what we see as our ultimate objectives and priorities as well as helping us to find the inspiration to pursue those objectives and priorities. Experiences which arise out of the God Dream perhaps have done more than anything to drive this desire to tell such stories historically.
