Is God truly a good guy ?

Absolute Zero

fon memories
I would like to pose the question of whether or not God can be considered good or not. How he has been depicted in the bible, qua-ran and the old testament dose it come off that he's the bad guy ?

Take for example the story of Adam and Eve,dose getting angry at them for consuming the forbidden fruit and kicking them out of Eden make much sense ? What of the story of job ? Why let Ha-Satan mess with job and do nothing for him?

As stated by a certain intelligent man, god is either impotent or evil.

Of course his kicking Adam and Eve out of the garden for eating something that he obviously wanted them to eat in the first place wasn't justified, and the story of Job is a joke, a twisted wager and nothing more. God is either too impotent to actually do something right, or he is simply an evil man who observes behind the scenes the downfall of the creations that he cares so much about.

I could say more, but this topic has been done to death.

There would be no absolute good or evil...only what God likes or doesn't like.
But he might define his likes & dislikes as "good" & "evil".
He's just another turtle in the stack.

If God exists, I think our definitions and wants about good and evil would not paint an objective picture.
I would imagine God would be more passionate, than simply all good. Despite the laws of physics, our world is filled with passions, turbulence and instincts. I believe a God would reflect our world as it is, naked. And the thought of an angelic hierarchy and especially winged baby Cherubim is a very biased artistic vision, in itself far from the Near Eastern Biblical beastly mythology in which the Cherubim are winged animal guardians.
God would reflect nature more than our ideas of goodness. It's understood that human beings aspire for comfort and goodness, but it doesn't seem that the physical world is troubled by such desires. I believe a God would be more troubled with black holes and supernovas than with healing the poor and the sick. In my pantheistic perspective, we are an organism in a body... and God does not relate to us as a righteous judge who keeps an account of righteous and evil deeds or rainfall and drought... this is all human psychology.

The interesting thing about this question pertains to God's relationship with morality. You must ask yourself if good and bad is defined by what God does, or whether it's not. Such that is something 'good' simply because Gods says or wills it so, or is it good in and of itself, and thats why God does it.

If the prior is true, and God defines what is good, then the question of whether God is good or bad becomes meaningless. He couldn’t be otherwise.
Of course this raises problems regarding morality, that are pretty hard to justify. Should God decide that killing innocent children was good, would it really be so? Hard to believe...

So if morality is independent to God, it infringes on his omnipotence somewhat, and also questions his role in our lives, at least from a moral guidance perspective.

Assuming i believe any Biblical account that references God, (which i dont incidentally) coupled with certain arguments like the problem of evil, one would have to conclude that he isnt appearing as a particular good guy. (Clearly I’m referencing the Judeo Christian God here).

I do not know what that might mean.

I was thinking along the lines of God as the ultimate source of valuations of good and evil. As the affirmer of creation, He thus makes it good. But it probably means no more than that I should have gotten some sleep last night rather than stay up all night, as I did. :p

One has to differentiate the true God from the many false gods that are worshipped. Since you mention the God of the Bible, Jehovah, I believe without doubt he is the very epitome of goodness. As Creator and Sovereign of the universe, Jehovah has the right to set standards of goodness for his creatures.
All that Jehovah does is good, righteous, and morally correct. His just punishment of Adam and Eve was in harmony with his standard of justice. As to why God allowed Job to suffer at Satan's hands, this brought to light the issue of man's integrity to God. Satan challenges God's right to rule and also claims no one serves God out of loyalty to him. God permitted Job to prove Satan a liar, and afterward rewarded Job for his integrity. In no way, IMO, did God act unjustly in this matter. Satan did.

I think we've discussed the Euthyphro dilemma before.

But even if something is good solely because God declares it so that doesn't relieve us of the responsibility of having a definition for the term if we chose to employ it. And, of course, if our definition of 'good' is simply "that of which approves" the question "is God truly [sic!] good?" becomes more than a little silly.

For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, Psalms 86:5

He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He. Deuteronomy 32:4

For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. Romans 10:13

The OT and NT repeatedly portray God the Creator as good and I believe meaning of good is revealed in the context of the scriptures as “righteous”, meaning morally perfect and without any element of sin or wrong in character.
