Excellent point. We're not only a planetary infection, but a naturally immoral species, as well.
So why your high opinion of them/us?
I have a higher opinion of mankind than beasts due to the fact that we are better than them. We are smarter, more evolved, powerful, and have been able to change the world in a way making it more compatible for our survival. Mankind is the only animal to do this; this makes us better than them, thus a higher opinion of ourselves compared to them.
From a biological perspective, a very UNsuccessful species, all things considered....
Nobody cares about how successful we are from a biological perspective, success is determined by a human perspective. From a human perspective, nothing in the universe is known to be as successful as mankind.

If you think an organism can be more evolved than another organism, then you've revealed that you do not understand what evolution is.

Humans are so smart they have caused the latest mass extinction event. Way to go, smarties.

"The Holocene extinction, or Anthropocene extinction, is the ongoing extinction event caused by humans damaging the environment (ecocide) during the Holocene epoch. These extinctions span numerous families of plants and animals, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates, and affecting not just terrestrial species but also large sectors of marine life. With widespread degradation of biodiversity hotspots, such as coral reefs and rainforests, as well as other areas, the vast majority of these extinctions are thought to be undocumented, as the species are undiscovered at the time of their extinction, which goes unrecorded. The current rate of extinction of species is estimated at 100 to 1,000 times higher than natural background extinction rates and is increasing."

Loving God and my neighbor as myself.

Well, we are better in some ways, and not as good in other ways. We lack the smelling capacity of dogs. We do not have the vision of eagles. We have no sonar like whales. There are memory tasks that chimps do way better than us.

So I don't really see that as a good standard for having a higher opinion. However, I think it is perfectly natural to have a preference for those we are related to. Just like our family is different from the neighbor down the street, our human family will be more important to us than other animals.

Of course. Still, I consider my dog a member of my family.
Yes, good point. :) This is called pseudo kinship. Just as we will create groups of pseudo-kin among other humans, we will sometimes adopt animals into our families. I say this as my kitty sits next to me, her paw on my laptop. :) It is also fascinating when other animals do this. You hear amazing stories of a dog who will nurse and litter of kittens and stuff like that.

Varies. My cat is more important to me (by some magnitude) than my excommunicated brother.
Oh I can empathize sincerely. My own brother is an avowed fascist and nazi. We do not speak to each other. We are polite to each other only for the sake of any family gathering in which we have to tolerate each others presence.

Mankind is the only one to do this while destroying their environment in the process.

Destroying the planet. We're certainly better at that!

Quite. I had a neighbour whose cat nursed orphaned baby hedgehogs, along with her own kittens. She was very maternal apparently. Bless her. I love cats also, cheeky little rascals.

"Better than beasts"?! Smarter, more powerful (?), more evolved?
In some ways we're smarter, in others, less so. How does this make us better? It makes us more dangerous and harmful, sure, but better?
"More powerful?" Technologically? That doesn't make us better. It makes us more dangerous, to ourselves, and to the planet. Clearly our wisdom doesn't match our cleverness.
"More evolved?" No. Absolutely not. How are we any more "evolved" than a dog or tulip? Q: How are you defining evolution?

We've been able to change the world in a way that's disrupted all of the natural systems life depends on. We're generating unprecedented rates of extinction, and now seem poised to exterminate even ourselves. We're destroying the ecosystem lefe depends on. How does this make us better? What it does is make humankind a planetary infection, and a singularly unsuccessful species.
Nobody cares about how successful we are from a biological perspective, success is determined by a human perspective. From a human perspective, nothing in the universe is known to be as successful as mankind.
How are you defining success, and what is this human perspective that you seem to think can operate independent of the ecosystem that supports us?
