Is logic over-rated?

Reality isn't much more logical.

yes it is, don't compare real logic to a program on tv (CSI) that obviously aims to make people think they are smarter than they really are because the investigations have been dumbed down so 'normal' people can understand it.

How can one ignore the eye witnesses that are mentioned in the Gospels. The historical existence of many of them is not in question.

Regards,
Scott

ok, your kidding right? The FACT, the absolute, verifiable FACT, of the matter is that the bible is a slipshod collection of apocryphal books slapped together hundreds of years after the fact. All you have to do is read it to know the truth of that. And your right, the historical existence of them is not in question. They didn't, don't, won't, and never will exist. In all honesty, how can you read this meaningless drivel and spout to us that it "must be fact"? The fact that I cannot prove you wrong means nothing, you must prove yourself to me. The burden of proof is incumbent upon the person that makes the claim. I can say that the easter bunny doesn't exist without proving it.

A lot of atheists put their faith in logic, but isn't that a bit... illogical?

And you can watch pretty much any Star Trek episode and the Vulcan's logic gets trumped by the Human concept of, "gut".

So, why do atheists put so much stock in logic?

Ask Gene Roddenberry, the dude that created Star Trek, why he is an athiest. This is one of his famous quotes:

"I condemn false prophets, I condemn the effort to take away the power of rational decision, to drain people of their free will--and a hell of a lot of money in the bargain. Religions vary in their degree of idiocy, but I reject them all. For most people, religion is nothing more than a substitute for a malfunctioning brain."

And also:

"We must question the logic of having an all-knowing all-powerful God, who creates faulty Humans, and then blames them for his own mistakes."

But I mean, come on guys, Star Wars is waaaaay cooler then Star Trek anyways...

I think logical and illogical rationales are needed. At times, one is more needed than the other, however, both are needed to some degree. Choice can be either from logic or illogic, depending on the situation. We can recall a famous idea, with every light, there's a dark. Thus, according to this, with logic in the world, there has to be some amount of illogic in this world. It doesn't mean the both must be used equally by everyone, nor do I mean to say one is better than the other for all cases.

"Is logic overrated?"

I'll work from the assumption that you aren't really asking a rhetorical question, but that you want a serious answer.

I can only ask you a question in return:
"Would you prefer that we return to the Dark Ages?"

Assalamualaikum.

No Logic is not overrated. It is extremely naive of people to put common sense and religion on different sides of the platter.

What is overrated, though, is the smartness of the human mind? As smart as anyone might be human beings are still bound to make errors.

The resolution being that any revelation from God has to be logical and its logic has to be proveable (that applies to books as well) and when explained properly honest human beings should understand and agree with it.

It they don't then it is because
1. their brains are limited or
2. they are dishonest

So no, logic is not overrated. However, our brains can not be relied upon to always be logical. But revelation can be relied upon to always be logical.

Well, you were doing okay until the closing line.
lol ... well we can discuss some in some other thread about revelation and whether it exists. Whether revelation is ... err ... reasonable.

Is logic over-rated?
It's not that logic is over-rated. No, its the problem that many who claim to rely on "logic" don't really understand what they are talking about. All too often, they present something as being logical simply because they believe it. It's kinda funny really, but many of those who claim to live by it are the most flawed.

You leave Gadfly out of this.

There is also this thing called "Atheistic Logic" proposed by gadfly, which is an entirely different kind of logic. You should include that, as well.

My friend, the number of those who claim to use logic and reason are legion. I would be censured (and censored) were I to start to list them all here. I used to think that some of these people were born stupid, but it has become obvious that they work exceptionally hard to get this stupid. BTW, were I to make this list, you and Jay would be notably absent... and just a couple of others.

Why, thank you, Pete. Being mentioned with Jay (Deut 32) is a compliment of the highest order in my mind.

It looks like I'm going to have to reinstate those frubals that I had to recall on the Johnny Depp video. :)

I think logic is sometimes overrated. People conflate it with reason or rationality, when it's really just a tool to determine whether an argument/ position is internally sound. It tells us nothing about whether that position is right.

Who determines whether a position is right?
