Is manipulation wrong?

Early in my life I learned that judgement accomplishes nothing for me in fact it causes me problems so I became a manipulator. I manipulate others mostly to avoid confrontation but have used it in business and other aspects of my life.

Is manipulation wrong even if its used for good or just for personal protection.

Wrong to who? It's really up to you to filter that question through your own value system. Personally I see nothing wrong with it. I see it as a very valuable tool for lesser magic :)

i don't think it is necessarily wrong. if someone was upset or in fear, i would try to give him positive thoughts. that's manipulation. i think it is wrong to tell lie

Manipulation is a tool. It's just like any other tool. I can pick up a hammer and build something, or I can pick up a hammer and bash someones face in.

"Mr. customer would you buy the car today at your price?" The customer looks at the salesman and then says: "Well thank you for your time but I must be going" The salesman says: "Well what can I do to earn your business today?" The customer says: "Nothing" and walks out.

A few days later the same customer walks in and sees the very same salesman and walks up to him: "Sir I'd be interested in purchasing the car at the price you quoted me." The salesman guides the customer to his office and sits him down. "Mr customer what price did I quote you?" The customer answers: "The price you said you could sell me the car." The salesman nods his head and says: "Mr. customer I just asked if you would buy the car at the price you wanted, I never said I would sell the car at that price." The customer now frustrated after shopping a price he thought he could get is now settling to reality of what the car sells for and is willing to negotiate with the dealer...

This is called low balling and it works, I know because at one time I did sell cars. But some people call this manipulation and manipulation in a bad way, what do you think?

I see nothing wrong with manipulation; it's the fault of the person being manipulated if somehting wrong comes of it.

Can we define manipulation first? As in manipulating people? If we are speaking solely in people I can't say it is immoral in and of itself. Only the intentions and the results.

I would say manipulating is pretty much lying to someone..(in affect)

how so? i mean sometimes it is possible to manipulate people by not saying anything at all. IMO keeping silent or saying something false or true both always have an effect on people. like dropping a stone in water

Agreed. I don't have to lie to manipulate anyone. I just have to act a certain way to get the desired results. Sometimes that means lying, sometimes that means telling the truth.

I believe we should be honest and have integrity and be people of our word. Manipulation has done away with the old trustful contract of a good hand shake! Let your yes mean yes and your no mean no!

Agreed, but it's not necessarily lying either.

There are times when I realize my first instinct is to 'manipulate', and that in acting I avoid doing so.

No...I disagree..if you "act" in order to achieve or try to achieve a certain response from another person..you are "manipulating them".

interesting :) i personally don't consider acting as pretending. IMO someone either acts or reacts. according to you, what's our other option if it should not be acting?

.

Well if acting isnt pretending then there is no genuine..(and acting in the way Im defining it is FAKING not "acting or reacting)
