I think so, yes. Aside from the economic reasons this article brings up, I think there's ideological reasons as to why Putin would want to be buddies with Trump. Trump obviously isn't a fan of NATO, which serves to keep Russia in check so a Trump administration would give Putin leeway to run amuck even more. Trump also wants to be a strongman/dictator like Putin, so he understandably admires him. Trump is also relying on far-right nationalism and the Russian government and culture has a strong far-right, neo-fascist/Nazi element to it. Much of Trump's base is, well, racist. They would be very interested in forging ties with a "white country", especially one that is strong and hasn't fallen to decadent Western liberalism. White supremacists ("white nationalists") love Russia and view Russia as the last great hope for "the white race". So they would be very excited about such a development.

I doubt Putin funds money to Trumps campaign as the Saudi's did for Hillary.
Saudi's to the tune of MILLIONS in campaign donations.

I'll go way out on a limb and take hits for having a "Pollyanna" & pie in the sky
attitude but I WISH we were better allies of Putin and Putin with us.
The world might be a safer place and world trade would benefit greatly.
Perhaps I could one day meet my 2nd cousins that I've never met.
Maternal grandfather immigrated to the U.S. back in 1913 from Russia.

Russians don't seem to like liberals or folks seen as the "Elites" i.e. the powerful characters in most conspiracy theories. It makes sense that they would absolutely not want another Clinton administration or similar in charge.

Agreed. I think Putin and company would have much more respect and willing
dialog with Trump than Hillary.

I used to be quite conflicted about Assange and Wikileaks. On the one hand, I'm all about freedom of speech and government transparency. On the other, I wondered when Assange would come up with a comparable info dump from Israel, Russia, Saudi Arabia or China. But it never happened.
Have they never sent an embarrassing email? Are they smart enough to not email?

Now Assange is meddling in USA politics. The RNC just did their level best to keep Trump from winning, going far beyond anything the DNC ever even considered. They stole the whole state of Colorado. And still lost the primary.
And Assange can't find any juicy dirt to publish?

I've come to the conclusion that Assange really is working for someone like Putin. His ability to influence global politics in such a peculiarly onesided way leaves me convinced he is not what he claims.
I hope he either dies in the basement of the Ecuadorians embassy or gets extradited to the USA for trial.

I'd really prefer not to be allies with a country where I could be killed just for being a foreigner with darker skin, as happens often in Russia to "non-white" people, including to people from the Caucasus, who are lighter than I am (and who are ironically more native to those areas than the Indo-European Russians are, themselves). (For the record, I don't like us being allies with Saudi Arabia, either, but I'd prefer not to worsen it by allying with a tyranny that's not only homophobic, sexist and transphobic but extremely racist and in kahoots with actual neo-Nazis.)

I was referring to Russia there, obviously. I would actually be safer visiting Saudi Arabia than I would be visiting Russia. That's really saying something.

Assange also claims to have evidence of criminally actionable behavior against Godzillary. But for some reason he is not releasing it just now. Apparently he thinks that he can do more damage later.

I would hate to be someone that Billary had that much against. With GB in so much uproar, it might be less safe than it used to be.
