Here's a post for posterity. I guess this is the modern version of some Brits calling the Jewish British prime minister Disraeli 'Shylock' during the 19th century.
In the context of the time it is surprising that he became prime minister. At that time and until recently Jews could not become members of gentleman's clubs nor of Golf clubs, not because there was any law, but their rules made it impossible. Most of High society was beyond their reach. There have always been notable exceptions especially in banking circles... but that is what hypocrisy is for.
No Jew has been prime minister since, though R Butler and Lawson amongst others attained high office. Butler carried McMillan through much of his term, but was turned down for the top Job, by the conservative elite.( leaders were not elected then.)
Disraeli even looked like the Dickens portrayal of Shylock. ( chance perhaps)
However probably the greatest divide in the UK has always been for Catholics. where laws excluded them from many positions. It also excluded them from marrying Royalty. This and some other laws still stand. (Tony Blaire did not convert to Catholicism until he left office.)
These were for the same reason I gave in my previous post... Catholics were seen to have divided loyalties and that their prime loyalty was to the Pope.
Muslims and Jews are both seen by many to have their prime loyalty to their religion rather than the country where they live.
True or not, that seems to be the perception. It is perhaps confirmed in peoples minds By Muslim bombers and Jews willing to help mossad, in whatever country they live.
If people of any group show disloyalty, people distrust them.
