Is your religion's scripture a burden to you?

Tarheeler,

You're harshing my mellow dude :) I've granted you that I got a few details wrong. If you feel I've missed any of the major ideas, let me know what major ideas I've got wrong.

Thanks!

I already have, and have no intention of explaining it over and over again.

Tarheeler,

I'm finding your responses evasive, and my guess is that most of this thread's readers will as well.

Jayhawker,

How have I bashed the Bible? Scripture says what it says. I'm curious to know how religious people fit what their scripture says into their beliefs. I started this thread stating very clearly what my perspective is. I'm genuinely curious about other people's perspectives.

Wow, I should really try to understand sexual people more often because I seriously just look at sexuality and mock it. Main reason I have issues with the whole pagan thing is the amount of sexuality present in it. I am not going to lie and say I have not felt anything erotic between god and man but I think eroticism is a good thing. The issue is that I find computers and religion erotic instead of people

I'm not sure if I want to ask about what you might think about spanking god!

I take inspiration from many scriptures, but I don't consider any of them a "burden". Mainly because I don't consider any of them to contain the absolute truth.

Even if I followed a faith where one scripture was considered to the most important or the cornerstone of the faith, I would still find inspiration from others.

Great: in that case …
my perspective is that you're trolling, and that it's as petty as it is shallow.
Thanks for asking.

Some topics (like religion and scripture) come with a lot of baggage. It could be emotional baggage, intellectual baggage and various combinations of those and others.

Does that mean we have to shy away from discussing them? As I said, I stated very clearly in my opening post, what my perspective is. I'm not trolling, I'm trying to discuss challenging topics. It strikes me that what you've largely done is attempt to derail this discussion.

… or characterize its intent.

But, yes, I should have at least answered the question: I find the Tanakh to be remarkable, persistently challenging, and, thereby, inordinately valuable.

No. Satanism has no scriptures. There's a lot of books written by Satanists about Satanism. The quality of those vary and only represent the views of the author or whatever group they're with. We're not an organized religion so that's a given. There's also a lot of hoaxes and other nonsense out there.

I take inspiration where I please. Personally, I always loved the Greek myths the most. I fell in love with them at a young age. As a Christian, I tried to read the Bible but it never held my interest for long. When I was a Christian, there was some stuff in it I liked but also a lot of stuff I found abhorrent, stupid and boring.

No, quite the contrary. The Bible is an endless source of wisdom and wonderful promises, both those already fulfilled and those yet to be. I agree with Hebrews 4:12: "For the word of God is alive and exerts power and is sharper than any two-edged sword and pierces even to the dividing of soul and spirit, and of joints from the marrow, and is able to discern thoughts and intentions of the heart."

I think its not the scriptures that are the burden but the way they are interpreted, my church didn't allow dancing, wearing jewellery, working on Saturday, eating meat, going to the cinema, and on and on it went.

You should come down to an all black Baptist church in Mississippi. My family enjoys it and I am sure you will also :D. If the hoopin' and hollerin' dont cure you of boredom I do not know what will

Its funny that you said that, because I always made a joke about being in a church just like that, I feel I wanted to let myself go, especially when singing the songs we sang at church, we were not suppose to show feelings of excitement when singing, we were told that w had to be respectful in the lords house. So yes I would do very well in a church like that, oh yes I would.:tigger:

I believe it is Lutheran churches that are known for their silence and seriousness. My family dislikes Lutherans for this, haha. They do not understand the concept of sitting in a church and not shouting. I am a bigger fan of masjids though

I use to play the organ and sometimes the piano, I just wanted to hit those keys with rhythm, but I had to play like an old women lol. I get very excited spiritually, and want to express myself, but that never happen in my church, the old, Seventh day Adventist, but over all they were beautiful people.
