here are the verses for you Don:
Hope you don't mind me stepping in here for a second, Eselam. I'd just like to make a few points here that were floating through my mind relating to the nature of Don's question.
First of all, I'd like to address the subject of what, exactly, an "infidel" is. Most people would say "unbeliever", "non-Muslim" or something to that effect. To an extent, that is true, but it's much deeper than that. Calling someone a "kafir" is serious and should not be taken lightly, as not all non-Muslims are considered as such. The word in Arabic carries the significance of masking, hiding or covering something - in this case, the truth about Islam. So what this means is that only someone who truly and honestly understands Islam, then denies it and starts spreading lies and misconceptions, is a kafir. But how do we know who is really a kafir and who isn't? We don't, only Allah does, so we, with our limited perceptions, should not use this word to describe someone. In doing so, there is a good chance we are committing slander.
So, a person who is confused by misconceptions and lies that other people spread are not at fault, unless they also continue this trend without even trying to sincerely find the truth for themselves. If someone lives in an environment where finding the truth just isn't possible, then of course it makes sense that they would be innocent.
The Quran does say "kill the infidels" in places, but we must take into account my above attempt at explanation and the excellent verses Eselam provided. Fighting is only permissible as defense and only against the guilty ones, never against innocents. It's as brother Eselam said, everyone must be treated and respected equally, regardless of their religion, race, gender, etc...
"O mankind! Lo! We have created you male and female, and have made you nations and tribes that ye may know one another. Lo! the noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the best in conduct. Lo! Allah is Knower, Aware." [49:13]
