Isn't dismantling the space program long overdue?

...well... last I checked, America didn't have any other hats. :D

You could make the argument that way up in Alaska, above the Aleutian islands, we do wear a raggedy thing called Russia as well. If that's the case, believe me when I say that Canada is BY FAR our favorite hat.

Well... Russia hasn't been physically connected to America in ten thousand years...

Though I don't know why America still doesn't like Russia. For crying out loud, Russian is the sexiest language there is!

Because not only is it sexy, it's sinister.

I just love saying that line "I must break you," from the movie Rocky 3.

While I wouldn't defund NASA unless a scientific organization took its place, I do find myself wondering what other explorations are being short changed because of everyone's fascination with making sure we follow the paths laid out for us by science fiction writers... I am a fan of their work, but don't think it predisposes us to be space explorers following their timelines.

While the study about the impact of low/zero gravity and other explorations aimed at enabling long term space travel are interesting, I think there could be better uses of the money (while remaining in the realm of scientific research).

One reason I think space exploration is suboptimal (at this point in history)... How do we expect to establish an outpost on Mars when we consider so many places on our own planet uninhabitable? Surely we can more easily use all the surface of the earth when help is a few hours away than we can the moon or Mars with help being days, weeks or months away...

Does anyone really think that living on Mars would be easier than living under the seas of the Earth? Then we have to consider the money and effort expended to get there which is infeasible at best.

What would mankind benefit by having someone land on Mars compared to what they could benefit by a more complete understanding of the oceans that covers 3/4 of the earth?

My bottom line... Let's expend our effort to learn how to utilize our resources on Earth prudently before we go plunder other planets.

The company is Golden Spike, and the CEO is Alan Stern, who use to be NASA science chief, according to your story. So, NASA totally gets cred, imo. :D

Yes. Cred is totally ok. But I don't think we have to worry about dumping money into NASA for R&D for the moon trip. NG is publicly traded (NOC).

Here's an article from last year about it: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-205_162-57557609/private-company-plans-manned-moon-missions-by-2020/

The venture doesn't have a long list of wealthy backers. "We don't need it. We're going to make our business run on sales," Stern said.

This is awesome. While I think a government run space program, especially at this point in the game, is still useful and necessary, I'm super geeked that the private sector is finally getting in on this. That's when space tech will explode.

To reiterate, investment in space brings returns on investment. Historically, 14:1.

Secondly, science is the big thing in which America is vastly superior. Look at any international science journal and you'll see that the number of publications from the USA outnumbers the rest of the world combined. Even if you're one of those people who say America is doomed, this is the one place where we still dominate by a massive gap. If you're one of those people who see a downward trend for the US, and want to do something about it, then you should invest in USA research.

And they will catch us all by surprise with their mechs one of these days :run:

Our satellites will see them coming and our orbital space lasers will disintegrate them before they have the chance to attack...oh wait, some want to dismantle the space program.

If all else fails the US rednecks can just throw Bibles at 'em. Smite those Godless, Souless fiends!

Think of how cheap it'll be to outfit our soldiers if we give them the complete armor of God. Bibles as swords, salvation as a helmet, faith as a shield, righteousness as a breastplate, truth to hold their pants up, and they definitely won't need shoes when their feet are fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
