Jail time for Joke

Teen jailed for Facebook 'joke' is released - CNN.com

This is an article about a teen that is facing serious prison sentences over a joke. Granted the joke was offensive and terrible and no one should ever talk about "shooting up kids" but in the context that it was obvious that he was not going to do anything of the sort he was still arrested and has spent considerable time in jail due to a bond being set at 500k (higher than the average murderer's bail).

Don't forget this is the same America that has been collecting information from us on the internet from via the NSA. Wonder if I've said anything online or in a private email that would be arrest worthy. I wonder how many of you have said something over the internet that was worse even that what he said.

This seems to be a serious breech in our freedom. Though at the same time we can at least somewhat see that the child involved needed to be made an example of as these kinds of threats should be taken seriously. However is the punishment far exceeding the crime?

I haven't been in active in Facebook for a while...who reports these types of things? Are people's pages monitored or is there a 'report' feature similar to that on a message forum?

I think jail was a bit much, but yes...in light of all the violence over the past few years, I guess they wanted to be safer than sorry.

I guess I won't talk about that time I played Fallout 3 and found out I couldn't shoot and kill a certain group of obnoxious cave dwelling little people over the internet.

Have you noticed that the language of the court system here is Latin? the reason is because we are under a system of law called Roman civil law also known as Admiralty law or law of the see. We are suppose to be under Common law which is biblical but in 1871 treason caused out republic to become a foreign owned corporation that is linked up with the Vatican, the inner city of London, and the District of Columbia. If you notice their symbols. the city of London is the Dragon, the Vatican which means Vatis=divining can=serpent with its dragon papal crest. That "washington monument" Obelisk is the phallus of the sun god Baal. We are under Papal Roman Law which is fascism. If you study the religion of Babylon that the bible warns you about, then this would be very clear to you. The bible says Satan has his kingdom here and it is not divided. You see it but just can't recognize it because you never studied that religion Baal worship. Learn that religion and what its symbols are and their meanings and you will see clearly the satanic kingdom here on earth

Five months in jail?

If I go on face book and say that im going to shoot up kindergarten with a bow and arrow to send an innocent soul, free of sin, to a land of flowers, milk, and honey, do you think I'd get a similar sentence?

Quite frankly I think such people should be looked at very carefully, and brought in if need be.

Those last couple people that killed kids, wrote crap on their accounts, and no one took them seriously.

I've sat on a jury for a physically abusive person, that told a child he was going to show up at her middle school, and take her out first, - then all her friends. We found him guilty.

Justin Carter wrote the paragraph below. It doesn't matter if he followed these words by LOL! It would be criminal to not call him on this, bring him in, and even make an example of such, by legal action.

"I'm f***ed in the head alright. I think I'ma (sic) shoot up a kindergarten and watch the blood of the innocent rain down and eat the beating heart of one of them."

The article says -

"Authorities said someone reported the comment -- which came about two months after the mass killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School -- leading to Carter's arrest February 21 on a felony charge of making terroristic threats. In Texas, that carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison."

That is extremely disturbing what he wrote. The joke in the OP was inappropriate and offensive but wasn't extreme disturbing.

Just a short question. Since the article linked did not specify what transpired when authorities questioned the person we do not know the full story. Now, if the person did go and "shoot up a kindergarten" and authorities had been notified about the post and did nothing about it, what do you think the response would have been.

I think the kid earned5 months for being that stupid after the age of 14! Who does that in this day and age?

So I can yell "Fire" in a crowded theater?

You beat me to it.

I was going to say the same thing. This is beyond freedom of speech, - into yelling FIRE, - or terroristic threatening.

He doesn't even have to act - for his words to have consequences for other people - including the most basic - fear and anxiety when a parent has to send their children to school, - knowing someone has made a death threat.

Very inappropriate response. I can see why someone might call the cops, just to have the kid checked on. But arresting someone by taking a joke out of context is certainly unacceptable. Had the same thing been said under different circumstances, I could see the need for some sort of soft action.

But alas, people should be careful. Posting on social media, or basically anywhere on the internet is like getting in a newspaper, on the TV, or writing a book; officially published.

"Terrorism" is a legal scam meant to inevitably be used in any possible way anyone could ever get by with.
