Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson:
“I know the racial divide that exists here. I know how hard it’s been for our city and our nation to come together. And I also know the disparities and I know the history,” Johnson said. “’Empire’ actor Jussie Smollett took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career.”

“Why would anyone, especially an African-American man, use the symbolism of a noose to make false accusations?” Johnson said. “How could someone look at the hatred and suffering associated with that symbol and see an opportunity to manipulate that symbol to further his own public profile? How can an individual who’s been embraced by the city of Chicago turn around and slap everyone in this city in the face by making these false claims?”

“I love the city of Chicago and the Chicago Police Department, warts and all,” Johnson said. “But this publicity stunt was a scar that Chicago didn’t earn and certainly didn’t deserve.”​

removed from the final two episodes of this season in the wake of his arrest
on charges that he staged a racist, anti-gay attack on himself last month

When a character gets written out of a show, the writers and producers get together to find a reasonable way to do it. With Roseanne, they just gave her an off-screen fatal heart attack.

With Smollett, they could show him walking down the street, getting attacked by two guys in hoods and getting beaten to death.

Alternatively;
Smollett is walking down the street when two guys knock him out and hang him with a noose tied to a light pole.

Alternatively;
Cookie and Lucious shoot him (Jamal) because he is signing with Columbia Records.

Alternatively;
Andre disappears Jamal to cover up the fact that Andre has been embezzling money from their Daddy.

It seems the DA is charging one felony count for each individual lie told by Smollet.

They tend to do that when politically motivated and it has a tendency to backfire. It makes for good press when they do that but when they go to trial over charging a person can end up with them getting off.
