Just 43% of Americans Identify as Protestant

According to a recent (2019) Pew poll. Pew is one of the most respected polls in America so there's no reason to doubt their finds. Other findings:

* 65% of American adults identified as Christians, DOWN 12% from 2009

* atheist, agnostic or “nones" now stands at 26%, UP from 17% in 2009.

In U.S., Decline of Christianity Continues at Rapid Pace

Extrapolating outward at 12% per decade that means that in 2070 only 5% of Americans will identify as Protestant.

Truthfully, I was shocked by these statistics. And I have mentioned them to a number of Christians on this board. They seem to be glib on the matter, not really caring from all appearances that their faith is dying on the vine. One member went so far as to question the reliability of any poll that showed Christianity in a negative light. They asked question like, "What specific questions were asked, how did the pollsters ask the question, were they broad or specific in their questions, what kinds of question did they ask, how broad was the sampling, and on and on....a veritable feast of red herring to distract from the very simple finding that Christianity is on the way out in America, following Europe's even more stark downward trend.

So I have to ask a few direct questions:

Why is God allowing his faith to bleed to death? Why doesn't God intervene in some miraculous way to stop the hemorrhaging of Christians away from Jesus?

One mighty visible miracle from God could stop people from leaving Christianity. All God has to do is speak up audibly like he did on Mt. Sinai. If he did it then he can do it again.

Why Doesn't God Intervene?????

Its important to have a global perspective, not an American one. The proportion of people living in the USA despite its size and influence is only 4.25% of the world’s population. If we consider the global trend, Christianity’s proportion of the world’s population isn’t going to change too much over the next 50 years. The proportion will remain just over 30% worldwide. However the number of Muslims is set to increase from about 24% of the world’s population now to overtake Christianity as the world’s largest religion by about 2050. At that stage over 60% of the world’s population will believe in the God of Abraham, either through Jesus or Muhammad.

I don’t know if you’ve reviewed this paper by Pew Research.

So God has intervened. He sent Muhammad after Jesus. Whether or not the twin Prophets of the Baha’i Faith have a similar impact, only time will tell.

I don't think there are any good reasons to assume the trends in religious belief will not continue, given what has happened in Europe and in some other similar countries, and if it is most likely tied to greater wealth, better education (and greater knowledge), and more communication with those outside of one's own country, and faith, then it could also happen to those religions seemingly not having such trends yet.

Why Doesn't God Intervene?????

God is not racist and Christianity is not just for America or white people.
Declining in the US and maybe a lot of "western" countries, but on the rise in Islamic countries and China may have the most Christians soon.

You'll be surprised to learn that

There are currently seven billion people alive today and the Population Reference Bureau estimates that about 107 billion people have ever lived. This means that we are nowhere near close to having more alive than dead. In fact, there are 15 dead people for every person living.Feb 4, 2012

The vast majority have died without Jesus.
@Deeje does not appear to believe in science. Last time I checked she believed the myths of Genesis. Her claim would still be wrong, even with that belief. But she believed like not be off by more than a factor of ten as she is now.

Perhaps the rise of ignorance under the influence of Trump. and his anti intellectual crusade.
is God's way of fighting back?

Perhaps God favours ignorant lying cheats as his prime tools to complete his work.o_O

If you would believe that you could believe anything:(

This is no surprise to me at all. Yeshua said it was a narrow path, so that implies that there would not necessarily be a huge following. Also, in Thessalonians 2, it says that there will be a great falling away before Yeshua's return, so... there you go.
If it's fading away, it's the people's choice, He's given us free will, and to "intervene" would take away from that free will, I feel. God's not concerned, there will always be a remnant.
Good point. Those worshipping Yahweh, our Creator, have always been a minority.

Though the time is part I would be willing to bet that many only became more ardent believers. They were believers all along. Revivals tend to get people worked up. Nothing new or spectacular there.

Now if there was a significant reversal in people that actually became atheists you might have something.

I've heard a few Christian scholars/theologians say that after Jesus ascended God closed the age of him doing miracles and making himself known to man. That has held for 2000 years. We've never seen anything that could be categorized as a bonafide "miracle". I doubt we're going to see anything now. Shame is that Jesus's sacrifice was meant to be effectual for all time as all men were drawn to him, to use his words. Now it seems belief in Jesus seems to drive people further away. How God allows so many hundreds of millions of people to march straight into the fires of hell with nary a peep is something I cannot fathom, seeing as how Jesus claims to love them so much. Would anyone have believed a hundred years ago that such a mass exodus away from Jesus could have been possible? And yet here we are.
Yes, I have heard that too... But i would wholeheartedly disagree.

It isn't that there aren't miracles, in my view, but it is relegated to natural causes, bad diagnosis or simply "I don't believe it".

Smith Wigglesworth was a renown person who had miracles happening in ministry. Dr. John G Lake is another modern preacher who had miracles.

There are current preachers too.

Side note: MOST DOCTORS BELIEVE IN MIRACLES - 74% Of Doctors Believe In Miracles, 55% Have Seen Them. The poll also indicated that American physicians are surprisingly religious, with 72% indicating they believe that religion provides a reliable and necessary guide to life.

The extrapolation you cited with a 12% decline per decade kind of shocked me. I am not an expert on this particular statistical analysis so I would like to ask you how that was calculated. Maybe you are absolutely right. But I would still like to question the calculation because I think it is more complicated than that. Yet again, you maybe absolutely right.

I would like to though share this video where the segment "unaffiliated" grows very much, and very fast in the 20th century then decline its position drastically as time goes by. Thus, I believe this analysis is more complicated contemplating in retrospect.

At one time, the Catholic Church was the only show in all Christianity. What this meant was not only did the Church contain good Christians, but it also contained closet atheists and heathens, since you had to belong or be persecuted. This was no different than one nation conquering another and the defeated army being force to assimilate, but resenting it

This led to atheist and heathen influences in high places since they were part of the whole. These types had more options of evil in politics; relative morality, allowing the smart con artist to take advantage of the hand that was dealt. This is why things like the Spanish Inquisition appear; non Christians forced to serve, learn to play the game, rise to power, hoping to change it from within. If you are force to be there, this is is what can happen.

The Age of Enlightenment and the Protestant movement allowed the Catholic Church to shed many of its undesirables. The atheist and the Protestants leaders went their own way. The atheists and heathens member of the Church, then followed to find easier opportunities. For example, The King of England separated from the Catholic Church, so he could add divorce, which is not Christian. He was never with the program. Rather he used his power, in the power structure, for his own personal gain. It was good that he left. The Catholic Church became more pure by shedding the trouble makers. After the middle age exodus, the Catholic Church was no where the power house it was. This was closer to the real Christianity.

If you read only the words of Jesus, Christianity is very specific and does not include all socially acceptable behavior you find in heathen and atheist cultures. If you get rid of these people, by giving them an alternative, what is left is cleaner. This is God's plan. It is not about numbers, but higher purity.

The current exodus, over the past few decades is similar in that it is purifying the remaining members even more, allowing the dead wood and moral rot, an excuse to leave and find organization that are more conducive to its hedonism. If these options did not exist, they would remain and contaminate from the inside' child molesters. This is the next layer in the closet; on deck.

All the orientations that were placed in the closet, by the Church, now have an outlet via Liberalism. Liberalism is a blessing in disguise in that is appeals to the anti-Christian. This further cleans the Church so Christianity can become pure again.

Liberalism is changing tactic and is trying to undermine the even increasing purity of the Church, by forcing its members to pander to the heathens, via unconstitutional laws. The purity bothers them, since it makes them look like the heathen that they are, by the ever increasing contrast.

That makes it even better. The vast majority of the dead have probably never heard of Jesus, or were ever acquainted with Israel's God.....their resurrection does not depend on it. Jesus died for all and the resurrected ones will be split into two categories.
The apostle Paul said of his fellow Jews...
"And I have hope toward God, which hope these men also look forward to, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous." (Acts 24:15)

And according to Jesus, he said at John 5:28-29...Jesus said...
"Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, and those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment."

If both the righteous and the unrighteous are called from the same place, then the 'righteous' are granted life because they were faithful to their death. That would include all pre-Christian servants of God. The 'unrighteous' will face a period of judgment because the vast majority will have to be educated in Jehovah's ways and learn to be good citizens of his Kingdom. Since they died in ignorance, why would God penalize them for not knowing about him in their land, and being raised in a foreign religion? God gives them that opportunity.....why wouldn't he?

If there are 7 billion people alive today and the majority of them perish at the judgment, then that gives many billions of people a chance to be brought back to life on earth in the resurrection.

Since the estimated numbers of the dead involve going back in time some 50,000 years, we can safely assume that their stats might be a bit off. I believe that the numbers are more likely about equal.
So you don't believe in eternal torment in fire--you believe in annihilation?

It's stuff like that is why people are leaving. And it's not just the fanciful and wild stories coming from it (like these mass-resurrections), but the fact Christians themselves cannot agree on much of anything. And today we know how oddly specific but not specific vague wording can be, we know the Bible does contain typos and translation errors, and it really just looks silly when Christians try to take this literally. Except they aren't. Jesus said he would return while all the apostles were alive. But they're all dead, and despite this broken promise Christians still pretend otherwise. And people are catching on and becoming wiser. Because today, with this being legally something we can freely do (here, anyways), we can question the "righteousness" of your god and determine, by the words of the Bible, he is more sadistic, twisted, and cruel than Hitler.

^^^^^^This!!

Polls of course don't predict the future. the percentage could slow or it could like a snowball down a mountain get larger and larger. My guess is it will be the latter. Christianity, like all religions has a shelf life. All religions die sooner or later to be replaced by newer ones and Christianity has seen its day. Jesus never returned. He will never return, sorry to disappoint Christians. Christianity will eventually die out and become just another relic like Mithraism and Atenism. There will likely be a small remnant of 2-3% but in the West it will go extinct by the end of the 21st century assuming a steady decline of 6-12%.

And Christianity is changing as well. In the coming age a thirsty world will be more receptive.
Yup.
Because we know Christianity is actually pretty nasty and awful that religion constantly needs to remove itself further and further from the source material to make themselves less Christian and more something appropriate for today's times. Because, let's be honest, some of the Bible today is illegal. No forcing a woman to marry anyone, let alone forcing her to marry her rapist. We know homosexuality isn't a choice, so many churches cut that out. You can't kill your rebellious kids or witches. And absolutely no slavery.
Christianity is so morally primitive and ethically reprehensible that Christians themselves can't even take it entirely seriously and follow to a t without their conscious and guilt eating away at them for rebuking amd turning away a homeless apostate, especially knowing their god wants that person dead.

Religions are tardy when it come to reform which is often forced upon them.

But frankly, human beings are harder on themselves than things said today in the name of religions. Our inner dialogue can be relentlessly intolerant of our own imperfections.

The Christian god is supposed to be looking out for all of this, isn't he? or is he AWOL when it comes to managing his religion?
