What is the lake of fire?

As Pegg said it is not a literal place, but as Revelation [20vs13,14] answers for us that the lake of fire is: second death.

Second death, or the perpetual sleep of death and not wake up.
-Jeremiah 51vs39,57

Jesus likened death to sleep at John 11vs11-14.
Jesus learned the unconscious condition of the dead from Ecc. 9v5
Besides the Psalms such as Psalm 6v5; 13v3; 115v17;146v4

So, except for those of Matthew 12v32; Hebrews 6vs4-6,
all the rest of mankind will be resurrected to either life in heaven, or everlasting life right here on a paradisaic earth during Jesus 1000-year reign over earth.

'Second death' would be distinct from 'inherited death' inherited from Adam [Adamic sin]

If we could stop sinning we would not die.
Because of inherited imperfection from Adam we all sin, thus we all die in inherited death. That death pays the price for our sins. [Romans 6v7,23]
That also means we are entitled to a resurrection to either heaven or on earth during Jesus 1000-year reign over earth.

From 'second death' No release or resurrection is possible.
[Please note Hebrews 6vs4-6; 10vs26,27; Matthew 12v32]
Jeremiah [51vs39,57] wrote of perpetual death [sleep] and not wake up.
Not wake up meaning no resurrection ever but everlasting destruction in
everlasting unconsciousness.

-2nd Thess 1v9; Psalm 92v7; Ecclesiastes 9v5; Psalm 6v5; 115v17; 146v4

Jesus will undo all the damage that Adam brought upon us,
and like Adam then we will be offered everlasting life,
either in heaven, or on a beautiful paradisaic earth, starting with Jesus millennial reign over earth when 'inherited death' will be no more.
-Rev 21vs4,5; Isaiah 25v8; 1st Cor 15v26

Wait a minute, you gotta stop here. Death DOES NOT pay the price of our sins. Death is the RESULT OF our sins. This entire chapter speaks about how CHRIST and his death resurrection pay for our sins. Please go read the whole chapter.

Doesn't Romans [6v23] say: the wages of sin is: death?

What does that mean to you? If the price [wage] we pay for sin is death,
then 'death' stamps the price tag of sin as Paid In Full. -Romans 6v7

This does not mean innocent, but just as a judge can pardon [free/acquit] discharging a person so his crime [sin] charges no longer stick,
Jesus ransom leaves wide open the door for the possibility of total compassion on his part.
-Rev 1v18 B; 1st John 1v7 B; 1st Tim 2v6

'Inherited death' is the result of our inherited sinfulness from Adam.
If we could stop sinning we would not die.
Also, If we willfully, deliberately practice sin there will be no forgiveness.
-Hebrews 10vs26,27; 6vs4-6; Matthew 12v32.

For those destroyed [Psalm 92v7] they will be symbolically cast into 'second death' or no hope of ever living again. -Jeremiah 51vs39,57; Rev 21v8.

Death is the result of sin. When you say that death pays for our sins, I take that to mean that death negates/washes away/clears our sins - that's what I have the issue with. Only the blood of Christ can do such a thing.

I'd say that "spiritual death" is the result of sin, but that "physical death" is not. A baby who dies (physically) has not sinned, so his death is not the result of sin.

On the surface we know a baby has not sinned, but every parent knows at birth that child's leanings definitely will be toward imperfection aka sin.

In other words, we are all born [right from the beginning] with a fatal flaw: inherited death. What causes death but sin. The sinless do not die.
What is right now Not curable is 'inherited sin and inherited death' from father Adam. Death is the result of inherited sin and death passed down from Adam.
-Romans 3v23; Ecc. 7v20.

I gather you did Not look up 1st John 1v7 B as posted.

Yes, agree only the blood of Christ washes away sins. -1st John 1v7 B.
But we still die because we sin. The sinless do not die.
Because Christ's blood washes away sins we have the resurrection hope.
Otherwise, there would be no future hope for heaven or resurrection on earth.
