Justice Kennedy retiring

Life didn't change much for me before or after RvW.

What doesn't make sense to me is when liberals scream about babies being ripped from mothers (border) and then condoning babies being ripped from mothers. (abortion). Babies are babies.

Maybe I need more coffee or something.

Should Roe vs. Wade ever be overturned there is a simple remedy, pass legislation that fulfills its intent. That way any “right” to abortion isn’t captive to the Supreme Court’s membership and more importantly Supreme Court membership isn’t under a political litmus test.

Legislation should be done by Congress, not a court. Nor should legislators take cover from important issues been abdicating their duties to a court. If abortion is to be the law of the land, pass the legislation. If the legislation can’t be passed, than that shows where the problem really is.
Ah, but the SCOTUS can find any law passed by Congress as unConstitutional.
Try again.

Ah, but Congress is preeminent among the branches of the government. A determined Congress can prevail over any SCOTUS.

No excuses, abortion law should be legislated by Congress instead of by SCOTUS fiat.

Maybe you should tone down the deceitful hyperbole.

Legislated yes. Problem is, our country is so divided that the courts often end up doing that job.

That’s the problem. Legislation from the bench is the problem, not the solution. A people divided can’t truly be united by courts but only through the crucible of legislative discourse.

given the direction things are going, it may just be better to cut and run.

Exactly my attitude when we did just that.

I had originally planned to work until no longer physically able (I was self-employed), but after the passage of the USA PATRIOT Act and the rush to war in 2002-03 in which dissenters were depicted by Bush and his supporters as traitors, cowards, parasites, appeasers, America haters, terrorist sympathizers - everything but fellow American - we could see the writing on the wall and, as you know, chose to retire ASAP and emigrate.

It was an excellent choice for us, and we have never regretted it or looked back (I haven't been in the States since 2011 and expect that I will never return). We found a better life in Mexico - happier people, a better culture, excellent climate in the mountains, and lower prices. America really had little to offer us then, and less now. It's worse now than then, and promises to get worse yet as the Kennedy announcement suggests.

Incidentally, we're weeks away from acquiring citizenship in our new home. We just had our Interpol criminal background checks yesterday to confirm that we are not in any legal difficulty anywhere in the world. We had to fly to the country's capital, and ran into some Canadian friends that are neighbors at our airline terminal traveling to Vancouver. We asked them why they were flying South from Guadalajara, a major city, to Mexico City, in order to fly north, and they told us that it was to avoid having to land in America. There are direct flights from Mexico City to Vancouver, but none from Guadalajara that didn't connect in Houston, Dallas, or whatever. They simply refuse to deal with TSA.

The pendulum is swinging one way now,
but it will eventually switch directions.
Someone will always be hit in the snoot.
And liberty is at risk in both directions.
Pffft! I remember my mom telling me that very thing back when Reagan was elected. :emojconfused:

I’m STILL waiting for the swing back to sanity.

I'm thinking it's time to immigrate: this country isn't supporting the values it was founded on.
I am thinking I want to get off this psycho planet entirely.

Sanity?
You want sanity?
I only said the pendulum swings to & fro.
Sanity isn't on it's path.
But we survived those before & after Reagan,
so I guarantee we'll survive Donald Trump.
(Money back if it turns out that I'm wrong.)

This was in the news, but not in any mainstream neutral sources.
Is it real?

Well, according to McConnell, it’s highly innapropriate to do confirmation hearings this close to an election. Schumer reminded him of that today.

Think McConnell will follow his own rule? (I’m not holding my breath...)

I was just listening to someone on the news who said that Roe V Wade is gone. I'll never face that, but I do think it is a woman's personal decision.
It's not gone.
Just someone's over-eager sky-is-falling prediction.
If the Court were to hear a case which challenged it,
that would be all over the news.

How about a court full of moderates? Wouldn't that make the most sense? Just professional judges, free of partisanship or politics, doing their job and interpreting rulings through the lens of the Constitution?

I do not understand why anyone would want all branches of government to be one-sided. In doing so, you're literally rooting for an end to checks and balances...

The justice that has commonly been the 'swing vote' on the Supreme Court is retiring:

Justice Anthony Kennedy to retire from Supreme Court - CNNPolitics

Liberal Democracy, RIP

WOO !!! who! Kennedy just abstractly flipped off his colleges with that move! This is what terrified me about the last presidential election. If Clinton, the wildebeest from hell had won, she would have wasted no time in filling the Supreme Court with extreme leftist liberal minded justices. That would have sealed the fate of the USA pushing it to a socialist cesspool of a Marxist nation. .....Ain't gonna happen.....cause the witch is dead (meaning she lost the election)... But don't let your guard down my lovelies another election draws near.....

Could you supply the citation? Because that makes no sense. You are also mis-characterizing McConnell’s position. It was to not hold SC nomination hearing just before a Presidential election with a lame duck a Presidential in office. That doesn’t apply at this time.
