Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy

Many Sages One Truth

Active Member
The sabbath is just symbolic of the eternal rest, the eighth day eternal, lots of names for the sacred mystery. Remember that Jesus said the sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath, and the Gospel of Thomas teaches that those who don't realize the sabbath is every day of the week have not known the Father. Christ-consciousness is our eternal sabbath rest.

Is it right or wrong to work / go shopping on the sabbath day?
I personally believe we shouldn't.
I work with "live" low and high voltage electricity. I risk my life every day, more so if called to a dangerous emergency on a Sunday. Should I not go? Should I not be able to buy a sandwich and a newspaper afterwards?

Don't get me wrong, I deffinitly believe there are certain jobs that are Ox in the mire type of jobs, such as police officers, Military servicemen, prison guards, doctors etc.
Those are jobs that need to be open on the sabbath day. fast food restaurants, movie theaters etc I don't think someone who is trying to keep the 10 commandments should go to, or work in such places on the Sabbath.

WHY?
FURTHERMORE, THE BIBLICAL "SABBOTH" IS SUNSET FRIDAY TO SUNSET SATURDAY, NOT SUNDAY

I personally believe we shouldn't.

Some Jews (and 7th day adventists) have differing opinions, there is such thing as a "Sabbath goy" who is sent to do tasks for one on the Sabbath, but this would not be allowable in the Holy Land itself. Some say you can't start a car, some say you can. Some say you can walk 2 miles, some say not even a half.

the sabboth "day" is what the op is referring to.

historical knowledge as to the era and origin of the biblical reference to the sabboth confirms it

I love Sundays 'round these parts. No traffic, no crowded movie theaters, etc! By all mean, keep the Sabbath day "holy".

Do you watch TV on Sunday?

I live in a fundamental christian area and sundays are held sacred by many of the folks here. No shops are open and no public transport is available. That doesn't bother me too much, because the peace and quiet is good. What gets to me, though, is the expectation by the christians that everyone should observe the sabbath and spend their sunday in church.

In my village, hanging out laundry, walking the dog or working in the garden on a Sunday is frowned upon (naturally, I do all of these things. Hell, I even save up my laundry for Sundays!). Over here, we have the Lord's Day Observance Society - an ultra-fundie collective of ministers and lay people determined to enforce a sunday observance on every aspect of village life. A colleague told me that when he was a kid here, the TV screen would be turned to the wall on a sunday, just in case anyone was tempted to watch it.

Bottom line: if you want to observe the sabbath, then do it. Keep it to yourself, though, and let non-christians get on with their lives.

The correct time period for the Sabbath is on Sunday -- that is if you are a true follower of Jesus Christ.

I agree with you, but I also believe that the Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. I do my best to not work or shop on Sundays, but if I discover an ox in the mire, I take care of it and don't berate myself for doing so.

What is the scriptural basis for the move from Friday to Sunday? The Resurrection? How does that apply? The "Lord's day" is not necessarily the same as "Sabbath day".

the biblical reference to the sabboth day reeferences the seventh day of the week

jesus died and was needed to be buried shortly before the sabboth. it is theological knowledge that the jewish sabboth began at sunset on friday

What does the ten commandments have to do with our modern social norms? Keeping the sabbath day holy is indeed one of the ten commandments, but those were rules written for a very specific group of people that lived thousands of years ago. They didn't have 24-hour hospitals or military generals or many of our modern carrer choices, so why should we apply laws two a new situation? The purpose of the instituted sabbath day in Judaism anyway was to help set time aside to give recognition to God. Who cares what you do on Saturday or Sunday, as long as you're in spiritual harmony?

Working on sabbath days can be a great blessing to people in poverty.

So sit at home on Sundays and do nothing. Let all the atheists, agnostic, and all other non religious people with no morals do all the work that needs to be done on a daily basis.

But correct, nonetheless. Obviously, if you don't want to work on a Sunday (or whatever day is your holy day!) you can just avoid jobs that require it and therefore leave the others to pick up the necessary slack but what if you have a clear talent (gift from god) as,say, a doctor. A lifesaver. The only way to comply with observance is to deny the talent. What use is that to god or society? None. Besides, if there cannot even be agreement when this day actually is (and lets face it there are only seven to choose from and I'm positive it ain't Monday to Thursday) what's the point. Not to mention the fact that we might all like to be so choosy but few have the choice at all.
