leaving a religious community

Any advice on removing yourself from a religious community?

How have you removed yourself from a religious community? What did you do and what happened?

Am not going to church tomorrow and have no intention of going there ever again

Tomorrow morning I will be happily asleep in bed whilst the faithful gather and pray

I can't offer specific advice because I think the way you remove yourself depends on your circumstances.

Well at the time I seem to recall that the Baha'i local spiritual assembly had this process where they basically invite you to meet them to question why you are leaving.

I decided it was none of their business and that it would be too confrontational to do that, so I just stopped attending and changed all my social media accounts from Baha'i to spiritual but not religious.

Enjoy your sleep in :)

Stop going.

I stopped going.

I stopped going. I'm sure there was a period of sadness and discontent, and they probably held some sort of memorial, but I think after a long period of adjustment, they were ultimately able to move on without my fashion advice.

What was it you left?

This is the second time I've left a religion, for several years I was a Unitarian before I was a Christian

Most likely they cheered. Either that or they never noticed you were gone.

How formal is your engagement with that religious community?

I had to fill out a form stating that I wanted to leave and I had to inform my employer that my religious affiliation had changed.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.

That's pretty bad.

You had to?

Screw that kind of control and minuplation.

I walked out never to return

Just do exactly what you are doing.

That's outrageous!
Assuming that acceptance of the “invitation“ is optional, assuming that you are not dragged through the streets in chains nor are you questioned while being suspended over a vat of boiling oil, why is it outrageous?

It sounds creepy and controlling

And I should imagine they'd use such a meeting to try and change the invitees' mind

If someone wants out they should respect that and calling a person who has decided to leave to such a meeting doesn't seem respectful to me

Have you considered that an organization might be trying to learn what they're doing wrong that led to your dissatisfaction with their organization and that they may be looking at themselves and what they could change to prevent such departures moving forward?

It's possible but I think the creepy and controlling explanation is more likely
