life in prison and the death penalty

The first thing you need to understand is that the death penalty is by far the more expensive option.

https://www.leg.state.nv.us/App/NEL...86&fileDownloadName=h041211ab501_pescetta.pdf

You are not saving the taxpayers any money, quite the contrary.

And then your other point is a perfect argument against the death penalty. We should not allow people convicted of murder to get their choice of penalty. If the idea of life imprisonment fills you with dread, good!!! That is the whole flipping’ point. Why do you want to let murderers off easy.

For some extremely violent people the death penalty is not simply not a deterrent, for some it is encouragement. This is what they want.

The death penalty is the worst option on all points. In terms of cost, in terms of justice, in terms of deterrence it fails.

On average it costs around $40,000 per year per prisoner.
So lets say a person spends 50 years in prison before they die.
$40k x 50 years =$2,000,000. If it costs more than that to execute them, that's just a grossly overcharge to our government like many things are.

So lets say a person spends 50 years in prison before they die.
Let’s not say that, because that is ridiculous. I try to avoid saying ridiculous things like that.

Instead let’s look at actually data abou how long a person sentenced to life imprisonment actually spends in prison. And then compare that number to how long a person sentenced to the death penalty actually spends in prison. Then consider the difference between these two numbers. Then add all the various legal and court costs and other various costs associated with death penalty cases. That is how we should look at this.

Ridiculous? Do you know how many people get life with out parole? The sentence may be ridiculous to you but it happens quite a bit.

One case is not sufficient to make your point, you need to consider all cases and get an average. How many convicted to life imprison die within the first 5 years? How many in the first 10?

Are 200,000 sufficient?

Statistics. Over 200,000 people, or about 1 in 7 prisoners in the United States, were serving life or virtual life sentences in 2019. Over 50,000 are serving life without a chance of parole. In 1993, the Times survey found, about 20 percent of all lifers had no chance of parole.

Do you know? I have a vague idea. I am trying to find actual data on how long a person sentenced to life actually spends before their life ends.

Do you know?

How many of these are eligible for the death penalty? How many of these do you want to kill?

Lets say you are 42 years old. What would you choose if it was life in prison without parole or death?

Going back to my choice as the OP presented it and not the death penalty in general, if I was guilty of murder 1, I'd choose death to deal with the karma immediately.

Like I said....I would rather be killed than to serve life in prison

How many of the people serving life have or had that choice I don't know and I'm not going to research over 200,000 cases to find out. You can if you want.

Why should the have a choice?

Something isn't working.

  • An estimated 68% of released prisoners were arrested within 3 years, 79% within 6 years, and 83% within 9 years.
2018 Update on Prisoner Recidivism: A 9-Year Follow-up Period (2005-2014)
When putting people in prison is a lucrative money making business this is what you get. When you make money from this you want as many people locked up for as long as possible, and if they get out you want them back as soon as possible. Something is working just perfectly for a lot of people making a lot of money in the prison business.

If you want to change this you need justice reform, prison reform, the immediate abolishment of for profit prisons.

Yes, no question at all that there are way too many spending way too much time in prison.

But for **** sake the solution to this problem is not to kill them!

If a person takes a life or life's, I stand by what I said. "If there is not doubt such as DNA, witness's, video, etc I'm for the death penalty"

Fyi, I think a rapist or child molester should be killed as well.

Actually the death penalty, if carried out in due time, would mean people spend less time in prison.
How quickly? Do you want to start denying appeals to save money.

Yes you are correct. The quicker the cheaper. But the cheaper the more likely the possibility of error. How cheap do you want it to be?

If there is not doubt such as DNA, witness's, video, etc. Appeals are another waste of tax payers money.
