Lifestyle Changes Won't Help

Don't ask for forgiveness over it. That sort of travel are top polluters, even worse than cars.

I know many don't have any choice but to use a car, if they are to be employed and pay bills with the way society is currently set up. However, there's really no need at any time for a cruise...

We could always go back to using sails. I'd love a wind powered cruise.

I got to sail around on this gal for a day, it was fun.

True. We've hit a point where petro cars aren't public enemy number one. It's vanity and luxury travel. We can even make petro cars more efficient. Floating cities just have to go, and frivolous jet travel must be scaled back.

The way cities are set up is a huge problem... gone is the neighborhood grocer that was a walk away, but everything commercial is set apart from the residential, causing problems for anyone not in a car. I see ome cities trying to set up bike paths between the two, but that's not always reasonable for families, or in places where it gets very hot or very cold.

Our entire infrastructure was built around vehicular travel. It's why we need better city planning, and green urbanization.

American cities aren't even designed to get around without a car. Even here in California bike lanes are spotty and a lot of times there is no sidewalk for pedestrians. America is also lacking on public transportation, which isn't good.

The companies polluting the planet have spent millions to make you think carpooling and recycling will save us

"But at this point, personal lifestyle changes will not turn the climate crisis around. A report from the International Energy Agency, which lays out a path to a net-zero-emissions energy system by 2050, estimates that individual behavioral changes would only account for about 4% of the necessary reductions.

To have even a 50% chance of stopping the world's temperature from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius, according to a study published this month, 90% of coal and 60% of oil and gas reserves must stay in the ground."

Mankind does have the technology to keep 90% of the coal and 60% of the oil and gas reserves in the ground. The question is when will governments, industry, and people choose to do it?

How many medical issues would disappear? Watch those cancer rates drop.

At some point kiddies will just have to clean their rooms. Why not do it sooner instead of reaching a point where one will have to do it?

That's what I see. It's very clear!!

I'm in favor of doing what will help.
But I know that no single thing is the solution.

Capitalism must die or the biosphere will die. I have been saying it for decades and people think I am being hyperbolic but it is the obvious truth. Some form of socialism is our only future.

It is an irony, and one that has me torn. But I'm still going to enjoy looking at--and listening to--all the nice cars here.:D
You're allowed to enjoy them.
Pretty soon, you'll be driving something
like this down the I-5 at 120 mph.

There are many reasons. The environment is pretty much the ultimate end-point, as without natural resources to exploit the models of wealth and growth do not work, and it's entirely unsustainable.
I'm fond of a Star Trek like model where there is no poverty, the pursuit of material wealth isn't happening, and there is no money.

Aye, such revamping is politically impossible.
And managed by our government....it would be a disaster.

Do you have any ideas on what direction we should go? How to nudge society in a more mindful and green direction?

I don't.

I do what I can, but I know it's not enough.

I am considering looking for something nice that is cheap and needing fixed up so that I can have something really nice.

There is an indigenous traditions in some tribes in the US where the most important man/woman has the least. By throwing a large party/social events they give away the majority of what they have gathered to others. The more they give away, the more importance and esteem they have within their community.
