Looking for a new image - would love some suggestions

My professional life needs to get a little more jazzy and expressive. I want color, pizzazz, an ooomph! in my look to more authentically represent my ideals as a dancer, choreographer, studio owner, and artistic director.

My hair is dark chestnut brown and is now past my shoulders again. I would prefer not to cut it short, either. My choice of clothing I like is a self-described "Rocker Bohemian Chic." And I adore cute shoes that draw attention to my lower legs that are ridiculously defined and my teeny tiny ankles.

I have the kind of figure that I know is really adored in this culture: balanced hourglass, but the rub is that it is often looked at as a more "NFL Sideline Cheerleader" body type and not a typical professional dancer type. My reason for bringing this up is because I like my style of dress to show my edge and to convey that my ideals in showbiz aren't all that commercial but with cultural relevence and substance. I've sold out to make a buck, and it isn't beneath me to do it again in the future, but overall I prefer not to and still make a good living. Dream on, Heather? Well, it's what I want to do. The community needs to take it or leave it.

Feel free to look through my pics here to get any ideas. I want to show my dynamism and slight edge but also that there is a strong correlation between my professional ideals and my image. Any takers?

I'm sorry - I'd love to be able to offer some advice in this regard, however, without seeing a photograph of you wearing as little as possible, or nothing at all, I don't think I could offer any meaningful guidance. I'd really need to see what I was working with.

Use your imagination. You do already.

My advice is more Hawaiian shirts.

(I never said it would be good advice.)

You might also try dresses from Paradise on a Hanger in Colorado, or Hilo Hattie in Hawaii.

It's not about the clothing. It's about the entourage, paparazzi, and people frantically trying to stick microphones in your face.

What are the fundamental differences between an NFL cheerleader's body and professional dancer's body? Is this difference in body type necessarily conveying, or implying, a difference in professional image? How do you currently dress, and what professional image do you think this is conveying?

I've been told I'm too curvy. That it's distracting. It's too sexy. That it isn't "athletic" enough. All critiques fueled my eating habits that I've struggled with until extremely recently, but that's neither here nor there right now. Typically, dancers are expected to be rail-thin and sinewy. I've decided to say, "Screw it" and to just be me.

The way I dress now professionally is more apt to be a Soccer Mom look. It's boring. What had me starting this? Well, even costume designers noticed that unless I'm going out for a night on the town, I dress really conservatively for work if I'm not dancing. Teaching, leading rehearsals, or at production meetings see me in a track suit because it hides my curves and because I've seen other choreographer dress that way, too. LOL

I dunno. I'm not necessarily thinking flashing cleavage or showing more leg. But say, a colorful streak in parts of my hair. More funky dresses. Gypsy armbands and jewelry. And HEELS! (considered more stripper gear than dancers Birkenstocks)

A) You're gorgeous.

B) Your hair is beautiful ~ don't touch it! :)

C) Are you looking for a new work wardrobe, or are you looking to jazz up your whole closet? Are doing this because you want a fun change, or are you worried about the critique of others?

*I should warn you: I love clothes and have enjoyed many a shopping trip, yet I'm a total suburban yoga mom who often falls back on her favorite t-shirt and jeans. My cute clothes only come out a few times a year...heh.

Ah, got it. This answers my question. Two thoughts:

1) Heels are perfect. (I love to wear heels with jeans.) They're a pain in the butt to walk in most of the time, but man are they cute! I say throw them into as many outfits as you can. And shop for funky, cool ones too. (My favorites.) I've found some great stuff on sale here.

2) For adding to your closet, the Lucky Shopping Manual is pretty helpful. The information is basic but classic, and you would be able to easily add your own touch.

Check out a brand called "Jams World". While pricey at stores, ebay is dangerously cost effective.
I wear a lot of Jams World shirts (themes: floral, motorcycles, planes, ships, etc).

This one is obvious. Just look at young hipsters.

My first suggestion would be American Apparel or Urban Outfitters.. (Target if you aren't rich enough.) Then hit up the thrift stores around town. Find stockings.

Or you can be like the real sexy ones and make the clothes yourself.

When you talk to me, pretend to have dropped 40 IQ points and hold a cell phone continously, and no ****, I would think you were 24.

Dust1in, those outfits mostly look very safe & neutral in color.
I'd pick out colors that would make your eyeballs bleed.

Remember Mystic, you can never go wrong with incredibly tight jeans. The less you are able to move in them, the better.

Violet.
The ONLY helpful thing I can think to say about I'mage making
is, Know who you are on the inside...
and express that personally, purposefully and artfully on the outside.

As a musician/entertainer I have my own body I'm-age hangups.
I do my best to just "hang them up"
and be my most alluring Self
with relaxed confidence.

I am Violet... My hair is purple...
I used to bead jewelery... now I bead my hair...
I like to sparkle dark
like a twilight sky...
I wear a S'word....
and I look... and feel... best in black.

So I dunno. That is me.

Who are YOU?
