knowing what we know today, does anyone still believe mary wAS a virgin.
she did have a man and can we really believe they would only have sex when they wanted to reproduce.

thats not in a man or womans nature, hormones are powerful.

Friend payak,

Personally love both Jesus and Gautama equally and personally feel your question would not have found support from Gautama simply because such discussion does not add towards the path where each individual should seek buddhahood to know IT all.

I am not aiming to insult the beliefs of christians, not at all.
its more a question coming from my very curious nature as to what modern christians believe and nothing more.
i love to hear the thoughts and teachings of other religions, and athiests,
this could spark some interesting theories, probably nothing new but perhaps new to me or others.

It says in the bible that Mary was pregnant before she got with Joseph, and Jesus had an elder brother too, James, so she would have had a child to at least 3 men. Strangely they do not mention that James was an older brother in the bible since it would kind of ruin the "I'm a virgin story", you find that out by reading the Gospel of Thomas. According to the bible Jesus had 4 brothers and at least two sisters.

An unmarried mother in those days would have faced some difficulty Joseph could have had her stoned to death for not being a virgin when he married her, her clan or the group she belonged to could have turned on her, maybe even killing her in a bid to protect the reputation of the group.

In this day and age women have lied about the father for much less, I think threat of death would pretty much drive someone to say anything; though I don't believe it is true either; by which I mean I think the whole bible is a story.

Friend payak,

its more a question coming from my very curious nature

Nature is what Gauatama professed each human to study through meditation.
Through true meditation all questions get revealed.

Not even all the early Christians believed in the virgin birth.

... which you accept, of course, as the gospel truth! :D

(Irrespective of what one might think of the Virgin Birth, such a crass example of selection bias is almost cute.)

For a mystical spin which I think I read from Alan Watts by "virgin" it was meant that Mary was in an enlightened virginal state that allowed her to accept the spirit.

mary went on to have several more children after Jesus.

So she was a natural woman afterall.

i was not aware that i made any claims, i dont know if she was a virgin or not, i was asking what others thought.

you said:

i am not aware of that information, i still believe she was a virgin. i don't know if islam teaches that she has had any children other than jesus

Oh well it looks like the myth of mary is sacrosanct. Apparently god really needs support.
Did god ask for Mary's permission???????????????

You missed a question mark. Having the right number is critical to properly conveying the import and depth of your enquiry -- especially when there's nothing else to commend it.

Not really, I did state that I don't accept any of it as true.

It is just that though James is mentioned in the bible, it is only in the Gospel of Thomas that it says if he is older or younger.

If modern Christians still believe virgins can get pregnant, you have to wonder why they are always harping on about abstinence being the only morally acceptable method of birth control.

Certainly do. So did early Christians. However, if you are a proponent of an early apocalyptic type of down fall of the Christian Church........well then you can pretty much excuse most of the early writing outside the bible that talk about her virginity.

It's just a way to mess with the contraceptive crowd. That no matter what you do; you aren't in control.
