From the China bans non-masculine men from TV thread I thought, as resident boy maniac, I would start this one.

What is masculinity? Women and men certainly may have different perceptions of this, as I've noticed men seem to think women like really toned/muscly blokes when in reality women tend to prefer more light muscle - or if you're me, you prefer them even a bit husky/pudgy (fat!) and not think of it as any less masculine. Is taking pride in one's appearance masculine? I don't mind boys who cry. Nor do I mind if they have trouble with emotions or just prefer to share little. I don't mind if they're not all amateur engineers and would prefer to paint. It's fine.

What does your religion or culture say about it? What do you think?

I've heard that real men don't eat quiche, but other than that, I'm not sure.

This will probably be highly culture-dependent for traditional masculinity.

I think there are many kinds of masculinity. I think the beefy big bear of a friend that laughs loud and claps you on the back too hard is masculine.

I think the scrawny friend that has the lightning wit, makes everyone laugh, and gets lost in books is masculine.

I can’t put my finger on how such different people are both masculine other than that they both consider their traits to be masculine: a masculine jovial stoic, and a masculine intellect.

Tough question to answer.

Most of the attributes that were once masculine have now become optional - except courage. If you're not courageous you are a

They'd probably really dislike me. I took quite a lot of Asian cultural studies including Chinese traditional medicine and my takeaway has always been that in most simplified terms, masculine is energy/investment externalized and feminine is energy/investment internalized. Everyone's level of each is going to be unique but there's nothing wrong or with more masculine men more feminine men (ditto women) so long as there is balance. Passionate but with enough introspection to be ethically minded. Meditative but with enough connection to the real world to not lose empathy. Everyone needs time to be on the move, and everyone needs time to be still.

I assume that they are banning anyone with stereotypical "gayness". I have known gay people that had displayed no such traits and some straight people that one would swear was gay. Are they trying to "cure" homosexuality in China? They should know that it does not work and is merely part of the natural variation that we see in human beings.

Ah, I see. China still has a ways to go when it comes to sexuality:

What year was homosexuality decriminalized in China?

Outward appearances of masculinity/feminity are purely subjective and even trivial. The strict enforcers of gender codes and their mindless followers couldn't be more antiquated than if they started riding horse drawn carriages and drank mercury to cure all ills.

Stoicism. Not that women can't be stoic and perhaps be even more stoic. However for women it's optional. For men it's a requirement.

For me, it means being a stocky, hairy bear of a man who got his muscles and strength from work, not the gym. Being a gym rat with a 6 pack is a vanity thing and ironically, I don't find vanity over such things to be a masculine trait.

A male friend of mine is 'ripped' and he participates in body builder shows. Sure, there are women who like that kind of physique on a man, but I am not interested in making my body like that. Big muscles make me think of carnivorous animals and violent behavior.

My body is what can be described as 'skinny fat,' by the way.

Is taking pride in one's appearance masculine?

I take pride in my appearance when it comes to my looks, the clothes I wear, and what kind of attar I put on. For me, it is a matter of self-respect and naturally not blending in with the crowd. There is something masculine about that to me.

I don't mind boys who cry. Nor do I mind if they have trouble with emotions or just prefer to share little.

Shedding tears is a good thing. It shows that a man actually has feelings and can be deeply touched by things. However, being a cry baby is for babies.

I don't mind if they're not all amateur engineers and would prefer to paint. It's fine.

I'm in the education industry. My thing is to work with elementary/primary students because we resonate with each other.

My “religion” (oh, wait, it’s not really mine) thinks that masculinity is when male persons provide for their families while female persons stay home and cook meals and raise lots of kids.

Those are more 'gender roles'. After all, an feminine man can still hold a job and 'bring home the bacon', so to speak, while a masculine woman can certainly still be a homemaker.

I think its something deeper than that.

Aha

You are quite correct George.

Thanks for giving me some better insight.
