Mass shooting at gay nightclub.

So heartbreaking. Thank the universe that two people were able to subdue the shooter, but so terrible that five people had their lives taken from them.

From the article...

A fire department spokesman said casualties had been transported to hospitals very quickly because of training for such events.

That there needs to be special training for mass shootings is.... sorry I can't think of an appropriate word.

One thing that bothered me: Why release the name of the suspect? In my opinion it would be better if his name was forgotten forever. Let him rot in prison in solitary for the rest of his life.

I note that the club itself is calling it a "hate crime," already, but that really seems premature to me. We don't know what the perp's motivation was, and it seems to me there are many possibilities. I think we need to wait a bit before we start recommending anything -- including punishments.

Get rid of the F-ing GUNS, for Christ's sake!

I'm afraid my sympathy for these events in the USA is exhausted. The remedy is obvious. I'm sorry, but there we are.

Yes, it's incredibly sad. Yet we still have homophobia on this forum, and obviously, in the world. As another poster said, we don't know for sure the motives here ... yet, but one wonders how many hate filled bigots out there are secretly cheering this story.
One of the real tragedies -- and this one I think I can state with some accuracy -- is that the efforts of the Republican party to turn anything LGBTQ into a "common enemy of the people" is a very real contributor to this and other recent tragic events.

I hate to say it, but Hitler did this with the Jews (and also gays and Gypsies) to great effect. And there are of course other examples throughout history.

You know, unity among humans depends on whether we have (or perceive we have) enemies. When times are good, we are mostly not concerned with everyone around us, nor do we spend much time making nice -- we prefer the company of our own family or local group. But when there's an enemy to face, well then, we must come together.

Think about it -- people in Britain prior to WWII weren't noticeably social with people the travelled with on the bus or the tube. But during the blitz, they certainly were -- "we're all in this together" became the mantra. Demagogues learn how to use this feature of our human nature to enhance their own power.

So this 22 year old dude who threatened his mom with a bomb and other weapons last year is able to get a gun and kill people this year. Oy.
