That would pretty much sum up how meat eaters are about eating meat, wouldn't it??
Calling the killing & eating of an innocent animal "fanaticism" is itself fanaticism and fundamentalism.

The above is bacon fueled mischief.
Or pretty much sum up how many (and notice that I don't generalize to ALL, unlike your assertion about meat eaters) vegans and vegetarians are about not eating meat, and about those who do.
According to the OED, a fanatic (adjective and noun in current use) is Of persons, their actions, attributes, etc.: Characterized, influenced, or prompted by excessive and mistaken enthusiasm...

I think this applies very well to the attackers in the article linked in the OP, as well as to any others who make their dietary preferences into a political and social statement.

I think what those carnivores did was act like a bunch of jerks, but I'm not so outraged as to fork over any green about it.

I'm fanatical about eating animals and plants. Relates to my fanaticism for survival and enjoying life while I'm here.
Not in my experience. Quite the opposite, it's usually the vegans who are viciously aggressive and condescending, willing to fight for the right to tell others what to do. Meat eaters tend towards the "Hey, all the more burgers for me!" sort of attitude.
You just have not lived until you've been to a trendy restaurant with a veganazi feminist. She tells you about how eating chicken is murder and you point out how aborting five months old fetuses is a whole lot more like murder and before you know it glassware is shattering and the scream of police sirens is getting close...

I suppose this is a joke, but you don't actually believe in a concept of innocent plants right? As in, plants feeling emotions and such.
It's a little known fact (outside of the landscaping world) that many plants are evil.
I've been attacked by poison ivy, various tree branches, wild rose (nature's barbed wire), & garlic mustard.
Innocent in that they aren't causing harms to others, but humans (and other animals) attack them, kill them, and eat them.

I am quite fanatical about deliciously cooked animals. Nothing tastes better.
Maybe chocolate.
I think of it more as a narrow moral focus.
