Minimum Wage

Honestly look at immigration to Canada. Medical professionals are in high demand with reasonable wages under a government run system. You could be fast tracked just by profession alone.

Reasonable is about 120k a year CDN. Workload is a variable.
I did just double check my numbers. In Indiana I was making about half the national average for my line of work. And the cost of living there is overall very similar to the San Joaquin Valley in California.

That does change the situation! I don't see an especial problem with paying lower wages if full room and board are provided. Although I am sure there is exploitation of domestic workers going on in HK, as there tends to be everywhere.

Totally off-topic, but how are things in HK this week?

There is expñoitation and abuse, for sure. And the legal
system is stacked against them.

Of course theres clashes on many levels..they are an
amazing 5% of the population of HK!

Overall though it is a good deal for all concerned.

Re OTQ- I am very worried about the future of
HK. I am so glad I have my choice, where I want
to live.

Slaves got room and board.

Generally not compsrable. Maids live in the same flat with their
employers. In HK. I dont know about Kuwait or KSA, though reports
of really vicious mistreatment with no penalty for abusers are common.

Is there a path to permanent residency and citizenship for migrant workers in Hong Kong?

It sounds like it isn't exactly a good deal for all concerned if the legal system is stacked against them!

Do you have British National (Overseas)?

A handy thing to have!

There was a very contentious court case
about permanent residency but as I understand it,
yes. CAN be done. I doubt many want to.

Citizen? I dunno.

A maid in HK makes as much as a college prof back
in PI, so maybe not ideal, but yes, a good deal.

I would have thought quite a few people would want to get Hong Kong residency in one way or another! Plenty of people do so in Singapore and Taiwan.

Great people can make more money! But like, more protections against exploitation would not go amiss.

Yeah I know that's the HK language! But I read that about 40% of people know Putonghua.

Cantonese I'd have to put 2nd or 3rd in my Chinese languages. Hokkien would vie.

We left in the spring of 1997.

You are more a language scholar than I!

Damn.

Seriously look at your options. Government here will grant work visas and hire you while you complete the exams required by health Canada.

That's very tempting. I pretty much decided I'm spending the rest of my life taking care of my for once, and the idea of taking care of others who aren't close friends or family lost its appeal once I got into a position of realizing how severely I've always neglected taking care of myself. But if it gets me to Canada it might be worth another round of straining myself (especially if I don't have to live with the fact my Indiana pay was so pathetic that even my just-out-of-high school nephew made more than me working as a grunt in a factory).

Quick video busting these capitalist myths concerning raising the MW. As expected, the anti-worker party is against raising the MW.

As expected, a partisan screed.
If you like youtube, try something a little more
intelligent?

Robert Reich is an economist. Its universally known that the Republican party is anti-worker.
Anti-union
Anti-affordable healthcare
Anti-MW increase
Anti-science
Anti-worker rights
Anti-overtime
Etc

But these capitalists will convince the herd that these policies are good for workers.
