Over the past two nights, I've watched Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay and Zack and Miri Make a Porno. The first was more or less what I expected (but no less enjoyable for that), the second was a surprisingly sweet love story. A romance movie, only with lots of nudity.

My wife and I seldom go to the movies, but we rent all the time. We don't watch any network TV or cable - we hate commercials so we rent instead of flipping channels.

Some movies we've seen recently:

The New World - hated the ending. Too much whispers, dull love story. I loved the character development of the Indian princess, but other than that I'd rather be playing guitar. I hated the ending.

Mr and Mrs Smith - I liked the idea of assasins getting marriage councelling. The end was anti-climatic with a stupid gunfight in a hardware store. What were they thinking?! The best part of the movie was the couple getting to know eachother. Brad Pitt's character was wonderful - loving his wife, beating his wife. Jolie was a bit too brutal for me. Funny stuff, but boring ending.

Crash - Very cool movie about racism in LA. It claims to be an urban thriller, but it's more like a suspense/drama. It personalized racism and demonized it at the same time - wonderfully done.

I just saw Mall Cop. I thought it was funny. My wife thought it was stupid.

My wife and I were watching TV yesterday and randomly stumbled onto "Cliffhanger". I'm not sure, bit I think it was supposed to be a drama. It was hilarious instead. It seemed like a spoof of itself.

Funny Games
DVD/ Color/ 104 Minutes/ UR/ 1997
An affluent German family is settling into their lakeside vacation home when a young man named Peter (Frank Giering) comes to the door asking to borrow eggs. Anna (Susanne Lothar) is alone in the house while her husband (Ulrich Muhe) and son (Stefan Clapczynski) are off swimming. A friend (Arno Frisch) soon joins Peter, and when Anna's men return, the pair takes the family hostage and begins to play sadistic games in this disturbing thriller.

Cheeky.

What I am really curious about is how and why this was turned into a 2007 American remake-remade by the same director!!

"The Secret Life of Bees"

An excellent movie. The acting is great, and the story is interesting and non-formulaic. A wonderful and thought-provoking film that will likely win a few folks some awards.

Hancock.

Movie was actually pretty interesting until the midpoint and a complete derailment of what looked like more of a drama/comedy character story.

Deliverance
DVD/ Color/ 109 Mins./ R/ 1971
In this 1970s existential action epic, four suburban friends (Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ronny Cox and Ned Beatty) take a canoeing trip down a Georgia river. But what begins as a lighthearted adventure becomes a voyage into the heart of darkness when redneck locals descend on the foursome and force them to kill or be killed. A masterpiece of grace and power, Deliverance still terrifies and enthralls today.

Checked out Lucky Number Slevin last night. Or my roommate did when she couldn't find Army Of Darkness. Just a terrible movie all the way around, albeit one with a great cast.

I loved this movie all the way through. It had an amazing story line and drew you in plus some really kick a$$ special effects.

Watched the newer Indiana Jones movie yesterday with my dad and the rest of the family. I was really surprised how bad Harrison Ford was in it. He's never been a great actor but he was stiff as a board and flat in this one. I couldn't even watch it all. :(

Super High Me
DVD/ Color/ 90 Mins./ NR/ 2007
Determined to find out the true effects of marijuana on the human body, stand-up comedian and former Stoner of the Year Doug Benson documents his experience avoiding pot for 30 days and then consuming massive amounts of the drug for 30 days. More than just an amusing story of one man's quest to get superhigh, this documentary also examines the hotly contested debate over medical marijuana use.

We watched Wanted today. It was totally wicked. I have to replace the disc though. It has a break in it and I have to see if I can replace it at the store I bought it from without the receipt. I am hoping it is on record through my card and that they have a copy available. They run out of good movies really fast at Hollywood Video here.
