Muslims - Is all seafood halal?

Gharib

I want Khilafah back
Assalamu alaykum.

Does anyone here believe all seafood is halal?

I have been reading on the Hanafi Madhhab about it's ruling on seafood and it teaches that only fish is halal (or what resembles it in shape). Do you agree with this ruling?

A number of hadith are cited in support of their ruling:

"Its water is purifying and its carrion is lawful."

"Two carrion's and two bloods have been made lawful for us. As for the two carrion's, they are fish and locusts, and as for the two bloods, they are the liver and the spleen."

As for creatures which live both inside and outside the water, such as crabs, they are not considered permissible, since
- they are not wholly aquatic.
- they are not fish (samak).

The thread is in same faith debates just in case it turns out to a debate. I don't want it to be a debate thread and be in the DIR.

I think all the sea food is hallal like it was said in the Qu'ran.

So you don't accept the hadith that the hanafi madhhab presents as further explanation to that verse of the Qur'an which speaks about this issue?

There is actually another verse which I read while looking into this issue and it says that anything which is filthy (such as animals, or lifestyle etc) have been forbidden. And the sea creatures such as lobsters, shrimps (don't know many of their names) etc feed on filth just as pigs from among land animals feed on filth which is why they are rendered haram, due to being a filthy animal.

Does this make sense or should I post that verse for better understanding.

I am also aware that the other Madhhabs allow all sea creatures but does anyone think that it is due to the lack of the hadith presented by the Hanafi Madhhab? Do you think they've only gone with what the Qur'an says and not what the hadith say (there could be a number of reasons such as the hadith having reached only Imam Abu Hanifah and not the other Imams etc).

Yes please. I would like to read it.

Maybe. I'm from maghreb and people here have always ate this kind of food.

I would like to post an answer to a question I found, which would relate.

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
Question: Asalamaualaykum,
I recently listened to an audio clip entitled “The Use of Weak Hadiths for Rulings” by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani, and in it he mentions that if a weak hadith prohibits an act then it is recommended to follow, but not obligatory.
I have heard some people say that eating shrimp is haraam; although, it is permissible in the Hanafi madhab. Are there any hadiths, even amongst weak hadiths, that prohibit or show a dislike for eating shrimp?
JazakAllahkhair

Answer: Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,
I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.
In the Hanafi school, only that which the Arabs considered “fish” is permitted from the produce of the sea. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar; Ibn al-Humam/Marghinani, Fath al-Qadir `ala al-Hidaya] The Arabs considered shrimp to be “fish” (samak), and is therefore permissible, according to the stronger opinion in the Hanafi school.
The prohibition of other than fish from the produce of the sea is based on the general prohibition of “vile things” (al-khaba’ith) that are prohibited in the Qur’an (in Surat al-Ma’ida and elsewhere)–and which would be understood in light of what the Arabs deemed “vile” (khabith) at the time of revelation. [ibid.]
wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani

Nope, shrimp is haram. Everythimg but fish is haram in terms of seafood

 Wow i ate so many shrimps and so did my family and certain people who have real knowledge about Islam. This is the first time i heard this is there more information why the hanafi school thinks its haram like what hadith or sunnah is observed and why the other schools don´t think so?

“Lawful to you is (the pursuit of) water-game and its use for food – for the benefit of yourselves …” [al-Maa’idah 5:96]

Never heard of them being haraam, there's a difference between something being haraam to consume, and something you feel is immoral or incorrect. Just because you may not approve of eating certain foods, it doesn't mean you have the right to condemn others for eating them if they are Islamic permissible to consume.

They use the verse that says whats haram is pork, and whatever is vile. I am not on a desktop so I can't post the exact verse.

Now the traditional principal is, the four madhabs are all correct, despite such a big disagreement in an issue like this. It shouldn't be a big point of conflict, and isn't. Just don't be surprised if you go to a hanafi dominated place and can't get a lobster dinner lol :p

Seafoods are halal

Permitted to you is the game of the sea and the food of it, as a provision for you and for the journeyers; but forbidden to you is the game of the land, so long as you remain in pilgrim sanctity; and fear God, unto whom you shall be mustered. (5:96)

I think people, muslims included, forget that Islamic fiqh isn't just one code. The madhabs differ in plenty of places.

Islam is wonderfully diverse. Its a shame there are movements who try to claim to be most Islamic and everyone else to be deviants or even kufar

Most people do not understand the wisdom of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala behind the Madhhabs.

But I think you are a person who does understand it.

I just have a question why does the Hanafi school think that seafood is haraam and which leader made the fatwa?

It raises more questions then answers but ok.

What questions does it raise?

The Hanafi view is based on a number of hadith which explain the meaning of the verse in the Qur'an which speaks about the bounties of the seas and oceans.

Another verse says that forbidden to us is that which is filthy. So we have verse which has a general meaning, then a hadith which explains that it is not all seafood and then a hadith which specifically mentions fish.

The other madhhabs are based on the Qur'an without taking into account the hadith.

The Questions are not important i will ask them when i feel the subject interesting again. I don't think i fully understand what you said here... can you elaborate? All 4 Madhabs use Hadiths its maybe that the Hadith had no value to the subject because the general idea is that everything in the sea is halal.

This thread is so funny. Instead of worrying what this scholar said and what that madhab says, why not just listen to what Allah (our creator, the reason we exist!) said...

[2:173] He has ONLY forbidden for you what is already dead, the blood, the meat of pig, and what was dedicated to other than God. Whoever finds himself forced out of need and without disobedience or animosity, there is no sin upon him. God is Forgiving, Compassionate.

Ok so 4 things forbidden. Everything else is allowed. But what Sheikh Yahbuti and Sheikh Yurass playing Gods on Earth? They have made unlawful many things that are not mentioned in GODS book, All Quran. I wonder if this ever happened before in history? Hmm... Let's read...

[3:93] All the food used to be lawful to the Children of Israel except what Israel forbade for himself before the Torah was sent down. Say, "Bring the Torah and recite it if you are truthful."

[4:160] Because of the wickedness from those who are Jews, We made forbidden to them the good things that were lawful to them, and for their deterring many from the path of God.

[6:146] For those who are Jewish, We forbade all that have claws; and from the cattle and the sheep We forbade their fat except what is attached to the back, or entrails, or mixed with bone. That is a punishment for their rebellion, and We are truthful.

[10:59] Say, "Have you seen what God has sent down to you from provisions, then you made some of it forbidden and some lawful?" Say, "Did God authorize you, or did you invent lies against God?"
