Myth: People are Fleeing California

Terrywoodenpic

In a healthy, free society people come and go as they please.
I have lived in various parts of the UK and for a while in Spain.
It has always been my own choice, not to get away from something.
I am sure Californians and others do the same.

Cost of living and work opportunities. often play a part in many peoples choices.
For others it is life style.
I have often chosen where I want to live, before fixing on a job. which I am told is unusual.

Awe! If everyone started to leave the land price would dive. It might even become affordable. :(

I think that's why people were excited to hear about a flight from Cali. They were hoping to get a cheap deal on land.
I assume it's because people like to hate on California. Like all the people who told me not move here and how miserable I'd be.
This myth has persisted since before I moved here. It's still not died despite it not being true. It's to the point some have refused to believe there is any growth here going on and explosive growth is impossible because it doesn't fit the "hate on California" narrative.

One big problem...
Property taxes for long time owners are low.
New buyers pay much higher rates.
Apparently the state's philosophy is.....
"We who are settled deserve a great deal.
If you're new or have to move, you'll pay our share."

Human psychology! :p

From what I hear, it's mostly people leaving the Bay Area and LA due to the soaring housing prices, crime and the exploding homeless population (SF looks like a total dump now and it certainly was not like that in the '90s when I lived there).
Pretty much, and they're moving to the Central Valley. The rapid growth started in the 80s, but it began to explode about 20 years ago, and from the maps I've seen amd conversation I've had it does seem like a "Big Bang" of rapid expansion.

Some are leaving, but to hear the way some people go on about this exodus from California you'd think there'd be hardly anyone left.
And I often meet people from all over here, especially when I was in Bakersfield.
No doubt there will always be a lot of people in California....unless the water runs out.

The air quality is terrible in the Central Valley, besides so much of the valley is trashed it looks like a third world country. I can’t imagine wanting to move there.

Damn. Might as well move right into the ocean at this point, and skip California all together. :D:rolleyes:

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
There is a higher than usual number of people leaving L.A.

There are a number of reasons but as someone who has been there probably because it is a hellhole. Not in the way Trump calls Mexico a hellhole. I mean being in the proximity of LA is poison to not only the body but the soul.
California, at least the southern portion is a cesspool of filth. Especially San Francisco alongside LA.

It is a third world. These people are just pushed to the side for the wealthy elites of whom this illustrious 'economy' benefits.

LOL.
It’s pretty sad actually, thought.
It is. It's my home state. I'm from San Francisco and it breaks my heart to see both my state and my city in such dire straits. There was poverty and homelessness when I lived there, for sure, bit it wasn't to this extent. I never saw human waste in the streets, people shooting up in the street or tents of homeless people. And I always wanted to return to California to escape from what I personally consider a dump and hellhole (Columbus, OH) but now I'm not sure what to do. Honestly, this is becoming the trend for all large(r) cities. Even in this Midwestern city, we have much the same problems (poverty and homelessness going up and the homicide rate is going through the roof).

I saw another article awhile ago where they made the case that many of the people leaving CA are actually white conservatives by showing that as more Californians moved to states like MT and ID, they become more conservative/Republican. IOW, it seems to be a "white flight" phenomenon.
I sense that MT, ID, & other mountain states appeal
to liberals too...what with all the beauty, snow sport,
& cheap (relatively) real estate.
