Saudi Arabia’s grand mufti has ruled that chess is forbidden in Islam, saying it encourages gambling and is a waste of time.

Do you think this is excessive fanaticism? or do you support this?
I think it's sad, really, because Chess has been played by Muslims for centuries, and it was something they and Christians did that didn't involve slaughtering each other. Hell, the game spread to Europe through Muslims.
It sounds just as dumb as the law here that forbids pinball because it "encourages gambling."

Chess isn't the only problem.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_humour
"Laughter, fun, and joking are permissible in Islam provided guidelines from Quran and Hadith are followed. For humour to be in accordance with Islam, the joke should not insult anyone, should not frighten anyone, should be within the limits of Islamic tolerance, should tell the truth, should not be offensive, should not contain unIslamic material or promote immorality and indecency."
Doesn't sound like much humor is left.

From what I hear, Achmed the Dead Terrorist is wildly popular in parts of the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia.

A traveling salesman's car broke down.
He walks to the nearest farmhouse.
The farmer answers the door.
His beautiful daughter is covered head to toe, & stays out of sight.

a muslim a christian and a jew walk into a bar
both the christian and the muslim start to pray Allah peace be upon him.
the jew asks them "why are you praying togheter?"
the christian says "becase i've been wrong all the time, shut up you wicked evil man"
than they both start to plan how to destroy Israel.
the Jew dies for a heart attack and goes to Jahannam

i think we would be great islamic comedians!

Wrong title, it's not "No chess in Islam" but "No chess in KSA"

The 1 billion of muslims don't follow the Imams of KSA.

You have disturbed them, if an Imam says something then it's Islam,
people here have great minds, don't you know ;)

Doesn't that depend on how the Imam is named and on whether Arabic is his native tongue?

Perhaps none have you have ever witnessed what it is like to see semi-literate people
take their earnings and squander it on lotto and slots while their children beg in the streets?

How do you propose to deal with the problem if you were their King?

I would start by distinguishing between games of logic and games of chance.

I think that it's excessive..
However, if one spends a lot of time on chess, and does not carry out other responsibilities as they should, it then becomes AT LEAST undesirable!

I'm not in favour of classifying things as forbidden, unless it's in the Qur'an

even if you spend too much time walking in the street it can become at least undesirable.
I propose the mufti forbids walking in the street as being unislamic.

Yes.

This aspect is true for most everything in life including religion.

I'm not in favour of classifying things as forbidden, unless it's in the Qur'an

To limit ones life to one narrow minded book, seems like you are limiting your potential education and knowledge, to ancient mythology and theology to me.

Why not have an open mind to all of life and others teachings while placing importance on your favorite book, but use the moderation you mentioned above?

Even your own prophet warned islam not to take it so serious. I think wisdom can be found in many places. One book does no contain it all.

True, i noticed that people in general tend to believe that we automatically agree with religious leaders.

Personally, I am aware that you often do not. But I do find the trust in and frequent reference to scripture somewhat more difficult to understand.

No, why it should be that way ?
It was an attempt at humor, by drawing a comparison to the Qur'an.
