We were debating this just a tiny bit ago. Now we see the reality.

Delta Air Lines is raising health insurance premiums for unvaccinated employees by $200 a month to cover higher Covid costs

  • Starting Nov. 1, unvaccinated Delta employees who have health insurance from the company will face $200 monthly surcharges.
  • From Sept. 12, unvaccinated employees will have to take a Covid test every week, while “community case rates” are high.
  • United Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines say they will mandate vaccines for employees.

And why wouldn't they?

It makes sense

Meaning statically Blacks and Hispanics will be paying higher health care costs.

I'm not a fan of tying health insurance to employment, but with it as a given, Delta's approach seems reasonable.

"Aye, that's the rub". Our insane health care system is at the root once again. With a health care system equal to the developed nations, this would not be a big issue if one at all.

As it is, we "strain at (health care) gnats and swallow (health care system) camels".

I mean we will probably have a sort of “no jab no job” thing here. And I agree that if you’re travelling internationally or even nationally, mandatory vaccines are necessary for all involved.
But I still can’t fathom having to pay extra for healthcare because of not getting vaccinated or for smoking (apart from actually buying said smokes.) Maybe someone arguing they pay a slightly higher tax but that’s it.

There should be some sanction for putting themselves & others
at greater risk (IMO). It costs both Delta & society (IMO).

Someone claimed that Covid creates jobs. I think this surchurge
is evidence that any jobs created are offset by jobs lost, ie, there's
economic cost for anti-vaxing.

I would get another insurance company. :)

Outside international travel which is understandable, in the US jobs are near important as health insurance. So, if one can loose their job then paying extra for healthcare is one of the least of one's problems. Both should take priority but I do understand sone jobs should require vaccination. I like so far that federal workers can opt to take the covid test weekly. I just hope they don't charge them extra. That would mean they give that option to "make protesters happy" but the underlying message is one day you'll get tired of weekly testing. Just vaccinate.

That makes the issue less about spreading covid and more just getting people vaccinated. Not sure of other countries.

I mean we can have a lot of vaccinated homeless people if one likes. But then depending I wonder if they would be at less risk when they had their jobs than they would be if they were homeless. I don't know.

Yes, some fields would require mandatory vaccinations (healthcare, tourism, aged care, social services etc.)
Fairly certain our Government has made that mandatory for such fields here. Not sure if regular testing would be an option for much longer, if it is indeed used in my state. I don’t think it is in NSW, though in fairness they’re on like level 4 lockdown, so it’s a bit more dire.

Well yeah, incentivising people to vaxx through monetary means is distasteful. I’d argue that that is a consequence of capitalism, in particular that which is found in the US. Since tying healthcare payments to vaccines would only work under the US system. It might be a bit harder to do in countries with healthcare payed by (even partially) through taxes and government regulated.
In saying that, I think there might be loss to social services payments for those who opt out (not those who can’t because of medical reasons.) I think that may be happening to those on jobseeker payments right now. But I dunno

Such a reasoning would only work under the US model.
I suppose straining resources unnecessarily would be the equivalent elsewhere. Which wouldn’t you make you very popular

Premiums are based on risk, and risk is assessed by actuaries who look at dozens of factors that contribute to risk. Thus, doing things that can reduce risk can also reduce the cost of insurance.

We often have much more control over the cost of things like insurance than we think we do, because we simply don't pay enough attention.

Ahh I get it. Glad to be a country that has Medicare as an option for those with medical insurance

Nice

Plus it makes sense.

They are not choosing a certain group to penalize.

They’re just following the numbers.

Do you think fire insurance may be going up a bit in Northern California?
