no sex? no food!

I'm reading this over and over again and just wondering how can this be possible.

".... The law gives a husband the right to withdraw basic maintenance from his wife, including food, if she refuses to obey his sexual demands. It grants guardianship of children exclusively to their fathers and grandfathers. It requires women to get permission from their husbands to work. It also effectively allows a rapist to avoid prosecution by paying "blood money" to a girl who was injured when he raped her...."

You have to remember in these countries, women are valued in goats. Women are property, a commodity, not really people.

To a large extent any way

I agree it's disgusting, but look how long it took the western world to change some of it's views (ie slavery and women's suffrage). As disturbing as reports like those are, I don't see any of those places changing centuries long held beliefs overnight. On the plus side, globalization is exposing these places to new ideas and fomenting changes in their society at a historically very rapid pace.

Because a dusty old book justified it in the minds of sick, evil men. And that is a sufficient excuse to oppress women, in their minds.

Seems to me that it was not to long ago in the USA that women had to actually force the idea that they were equal down the mens throats...

I think that's too much of a generalization. Many men were for equal rights between the sexes. In fact, if there were no men supporting equal rights, it is unlikely those sexist laws would have changed.

However, those men could voice their support for equal rights without fear of being killed. In these countries, you get killed for the slightest dissent with authorities.

I understand what you are saying, but just want to make clear that the USA and the Middle East are two very different political environments and have always been. And that certainly contributes to factors like equality.

I am not in disagreement with you.
I was merely pointing out that even in the USA it was not to long ago that the situation was similar.

I said SIMILAR, not the same.

I've never understood even on a cultural or religious basis why women are so looked down upon. There's just no words to describe how not only savage it is to women but you would think people would have more common sense than this.

Very sad.

Yeah, but we as westeners like to forget that we to once had practices that would/should be denounced by todays understanding of human rights. We like to think that we should be able t wasve a magic wand over certian areas of the world and suddenly all will agree with us. We expect that they should do in 5-10 years what it took us 100+ years to do (and we still haven't worked all the kinks out in our system).
