I was paying at one point. But, anymore, without Frubals it ain't happenin'. I also do not like being stuck with one color scheme. And while I don't think navigation is bad, "DIR" doesn't stand out like it used it.
To me it's the "if paid accounts mattered more (to me) and the discount pricing continued, I'd join". Perhaps fancier titles - rather than "Premium Member" how about "Junior Overlord"? Or maybe enter people in a contest with 100 real frubals as the prize rather than the debased frubals that I hand out on a whim today. Or a DIR only for paid members entitled "One DIR to rule them all".
It's clear to me that the marketing department here needs an upgrade or this could be the result:

I'm so broke it's ridiculous. I don't have a reason to, though. The ads are frustrating but they don't fill up my posting screen. I guess it's personal preference.
Couldn't this all be done on a site like reddit which is free and easy to use.
The owner should think over his monetization scheme.
I get that he has to pay for the overhead of keeping the site up, but having ads as intrusive as these is just bad. That's my honest opinion. I can handle one or two, but now, ads are at the top, bottom and side. That's on desktop. On mobile, I have to scroll through 10 ads to collect my thoughts and continue my post. It's cumbersome. Plus the ads that have video sucks up bandwidth and cpu. Bandwidth is not free. It just makes the experience worst when I'm fighting to type my thoughts down against the advertising.
It requires a 50-70 dollar payment to get a clean experience? That's ludicrous when compared to other forums.
It's pretty ingenuous to market a site about religion, philosophy, politics and other higher communal ideals then forcing the patrons to scroll through a bunch of trivial ads that no one really cares about.
I did once consider paying for premium but now, the proposition feels forced. I'm forced to be a consumer of something I really don't care about or respect as much as I used to.
The owner could have went with a different scheme instead of ads and could simply asked for donations, like wikipedia. Understand the product and maintain its ideal and integrity. This is just watering down the product.
I might not be posting here for much longer because I have to read headlines like "After losing 200lbs Mama June is actually Gorgeous" or "What Mallory From 'Family Ties' Looks like Now is Insane!"

Or -you dont want to pay for whatever reason, but STILL dont like ads - then the answer is just as simple - dont click the ads - period full stop..lol...ignore them is all you have to do its really THAT EASY....lol...

Sounding a little Trumpish there, n'est pas? Ads pay for the site just as becoming a premium member does. You pay with currency or by having to look at ads. Me? Call it professional curiosity, but I like seeing the ads.
As the owner of a very successful forum, I offer my perspective. I don't have a problem with the ads. I won't use Taboola as I think such click bait would lessen the attraction of ScubaBoard. I stick with Adchoice (Google) if I haven't already filled up the ads with our own sales. I'm told that our ad revenue out performs 99.9% of similarly trafficked sites (per Google). So most of our ads are Scuba related which our users appreciate. Our "Go Red" users do have the option of turning off ads but only about a quarter of them use that. I don't know the dynamics here, but while we have about a quarter million registered users, we enjoy anywhere from half a million to a max of 1.4 million visitors every month. My ad revenue far exceeds the revenue I receive from premium members. It's all good. I'm happy either way!
Because I like being in the cheap seats with the hoi poloi & riffraff.
If I sported that PREMIUM MEMBER badge, it would be to put on
airs....like that guy who continually brags about his own forum.

If there were an even lower status, I'd go for it.
