I like the commercial. Too bad we aren't at the point where it could have been two men in bed.
That's what I was thinking. Even after considering yogurt, for whatever reason, has been gender-typed towards women, as far as marketing goes two women are far more "acceptable" than two men.

Although this is certainly warm and fuzzy is it good advertising? When you consider gays and lesbians are not more than 8 per cent of the population is it worth risking the loss of your customer base just to appear enlightened? Just askin'...

I wouldn't assume they haven't thought this through.
1) Their brand recognition just shot up.
2) They appear to be appealing to a higher end market, with disposable income, so their demographics are unlikely represented by a straight 'slice of America'
3) It's just possible that they're not purely aiming at profit here. But unlikely.

It's a risky strategy, I would agree, but I would think it's a strategy, and a thought through one at that. No way they expected no controversy in America. This would possibly raise a slight blip in Australia even.

Target was WAY ahead of the game with their same sex wedding registry in addition to their marketing strategy of locations and personality-driven product line coupled with lower prices. Chobani yogurt is employing the same kind of strategy as Target had done as well as Cheerios cereal (with the interracial family example).

I will add, though, that this isn't new. This incident reminded me of One Million Moms protested Sears for putting a lesbian couple, who was wearing wedding rings and with a child present, in their catalog.

Actually, I think a lot of people, myself included, appreciate business who go out of their way to acknowledge the newly established rights of homosexuals.

Personally, I suspect the one reason why people even complain about such advertisement is because they want and expect LGBT in general to act all clandestine and ashamed.

I gather many of those protesting are not necessarily offended by the lack of shame so much as they are puzzled by what they are expected to do from now on.

Once upon a time (some 60 or 65 years ago) Lucille Ball could not be shown sharing a bed with her husband (in real life and in fiction both) because people did not know how to handle it. Children would ask why they did not have separate beds, and apparently telling them that married couples like to sleep together would corrupt them in some way.

These days it is same sex couples.

If you ask me, the display of such fear of acknowledgement that people live and find happiness in varied ways is far more harmful than the acknowledgement itself could possibly be.

I suspect quite a few older people live in perpetual fear of finding out that they are truly LGBT in some way, mainly because they have been told from a young age that LGBT are inherently shameful. And because statistically some of them are likely LGBT in denial they tend to cling to the hope that it is in some way a choice that can be "fixed".

Such unnecessary misery born out of fear.
