The logical reason would be that someone complained about it and thereby made it known to the authorities that he had them. I doubt that these animals can be rehabilitated once they've become accustomed to regular human contact which is likely why they had to be put down.Just for the record, the guy was breaking the law by keeping the squirrel and raccoon. Why they picked on him after 7 years of tolerating the situation, I don't know.
But instead of blaming the idiot that altered their natural behavior, for no logical or legitimate reason, we want to blame the agency that then had to correct the problem. Because hating and blaming the government is all the rage among the idiot right these days. And just the words "New York" will trigger their outrage.
