I thought you'd all enjoy a picture of one of the cows up on the farm.
Are these cows? Don't look like what we have here.

Maya, take care. They are going to eat up the plants. (Oh yes, they are cows and calves. I was just trying to be funny).

These are adapted to slightly colder weather in the Scottish Highlands.

I found it funny.

Indian cow, and western cow are quite different. The Indian cow's 'hump' is an adaptation for hot weather, for example. But there are other differences, like the milk. I couldn't find a direct comparison chart, but I'm sure one exists. I love them all.

Domesticated from separate sources, as it happens. The humped cattle, or zebu, found in India and much of Africa (mixed with the native African cattle), and various other places, are descended from the Asian aurochs, which went extinct during the reign of the Indus Valley Civilisation. It's better adapted to warmer climes. The taurine cattle found in Europe and so on (like Murky the Highland Cow above) were domesticated in Mesopotamia, and are better for colder areas.

Of course, a massive amount of breeds are mixtures between these two subspecies, and may also carry genes from yak, gaur, banteng, etc.

So, my India trip has ben postponed until January 2016. I'm not too upset about it though, as it means A.) I will have more time to save money and B.) I'll likely get to attend a Bengali wedding in Calcutta. :)

Going to my daughter's place for three days. They are going for a marriage (Lucknow), and need protection for the house.
