Pearls of Wisdom

Quran & Sunnah
"Worship and obedience illuminate the heart and make it strong and steadfast, until it becomes like a clear mirror, shining with light.
When Shaytaan (Satan) draws close, he is struck by its light like those who try to eavesdrop [in the heavens] are struck by the shooting stars, and Shaytaan flees from this heart with more terror than a wolf fleeing from a lion."

Ibn al Qayyim in Al-Jawaab al-Kaafi, p. 64

Quran & Sunnah
"Truly in the heart there is a void that can not be removed except with the company of Allah. And in it there is a sadness that can not be removed except with the happiness of knowing Allah and being true to Him. And in it there is an emptiness that can not be filled except with love for Him and by turning to Him and always remembering Him. And if a person were given all of the world and what is in it, it would not fill this emptiness." -- Ibn Qayyim al Jawziyya

Living what you teach

Prophet Muhammad (may peace & blessing of Allah be upon him) said:
"A person who teaches goodness to others while neglecting his own soul is like an oil lamp, which illumines others while burning itself out"

The above Hadith was narrated by Al-Tirmithi. Translation by Hamza Yusuf. Taken from the book: "The Content of Character"

Surely if you teach goodness you cannot by definition be neglecting your own soul, as the teachings you exude will automatically serve to nourish your spirit, whether you realise it consciously or not

Believe me there are people out there who teach goodness but don't follow it and they don't apply it to themseleves.

What can my enemies do to me? I have in my breast both my heaven and my garden. If i travel they are with me, never leaving me. Imprisonment for me is a chance to be alone with my Lord. To be killed is martyrdom and to be exiled from my land is a spiritual journey.

Trials and tribulation are like feeling the heat and cold, when one knows that they cannot be avoided, he will not feel anger at their onset, nor will he be distressed or disheartened." ~ Ibn Taymiyyah ~

"If the first inward thought is not warded off, it will generate a desire, then the desire will generate a wish, and the wish will generate an intention, and the intention will generate the action, and the action will result in ruin and divine wrath. So evil must be cut off at its root, which is when it is simply a thought that crosses the mind, from which all the other things follow on."
~ Imam abu Hamid al-Ghazzali [Ihyaa Uloom al-Deen, 6/17]

Imam Al-Ghazali

“The servant exists between the Hands of Allah at two times- while standing during performing prayer, and while standing on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever fulfills the rights of the first standing, will in fact be facilitating the second one. And whoever considers this easy and does not pay due attention to it, he will be making the other one difficult for himself.” ~Ibn Al-Qayyim
