I think it's more than a little paranoid of you to be interpreting all this in that light.

Like I said: all this thread is about is about giving people a choice, and trying to determine whether or not people want that choice.

You obviously don't, which is fine.

But I really don't think the other members need you to warn them about the potential risks of sharing personal information on the internet.

We're all grown ups here (sort of).
You're free to your opinion. I wasn't always this "paranoid," as you call it. Experience on a number of internet forums over the years have shown me that I'm usually not paranoid enough.
You know, there are a lot of unmoderated forums out there. If you distrust/dislike moderation that much why aren't you hanging out in one of those? Rhetorical question.

You want and need the protection, but at the same time you like to be able to complain about the protectors.

It's a pretty common thing.
No, I visit unmoderated forums, too. This is serious copium on your part.
Just a hunch but I'm going to guess you're probably the only person in here who's going to interpret this thing that way.

Although there may be one or two more who chime in along those lines now that you've put the bug in their ear.
I certainly hope so, if they have any sense in them.

Look what happens when someone raises a genuine concern about the mere possibility that a moderator could abuse their power. They're compared to being paranoid about werewolf attacks.

Is that really what you think makes a forum safe?
Of course you don't. Probably because you haven't really thought about it.
I've thought about it more than you have, clearly.

Your posts here reek of self-inflated entitlement. That's not much of a surprise. I find that most internet moderators are power-tripping narcissists, so behavior like this is par for the course.

I'm not going to deep throat your boots for you. That's what really gets to you, isn't it? That I'm aware of how little I actually need you.

You say you're an adult, but you're acting like a kid who's been caught with their hand in the cookie jar. Fine, whatever. Do your lame PR stunt where you mention me later in the thread to strawman me so that you can feel like your social status hasn't been impacted. If you ever decide to make good on that "adult" thing and seriously ask yourself if you're putting yourself in an unfair position of influence, let me know.

Or come up with some sham excuse to ban me, like most petty mods would do at this point. You'd be doing me a favor. I spend too much time on RF, anyway.

And by 'safe' you obviously mean "Safe to insult the mods (people who are working for me for free) with impunity because after all, I'm the customer and they're all just lowly service people".

Yeah, I'm the one who's entitled.
I've thought about it more than you have, clearly.

Yes and there's a word for people who worry this much about things with this such a low likelihood of ever happening.

Your posts here reek of self-inflated entitlement.

I'm guessing you usually 'find' whatever you need to.

No, really I'd rather people like you didn't try to interact with me at all.
That I'm aware of how little I actually need you.

And yet here you are bending over backwards to get my attention.
You say you're an adult, but you're acting like a kid who's been caught with their hand in the cookie jar.

Lol! Wonder what you think you caught me doing, standing up for myself?

Yes, with people like you that's always a cardinal sin isn't it?

I agree.

I agree.

You're not standing up for yourself by trying to manufacture a hostile narrative towards me for simply voicing my concerns about what could happen with a new policy.

The moderator with the power to ban and kick me does not have to "stand up" to me by strawmanning my points, insulting me throughout the thread, and mentioning me later on in the thread to someone else in order to slander me further. Especially since all I said is that this new direction could lend itself to potential abuse.

That is not an attack on you. Quit playing the victim.

On the contrary, you're abusing your power right here in this thread. Whether you consider yourself to be doing me a "service" or not. You're the one who holds the cards. I'm simply refusing to let you bully me into silence.

Yes, your concerns that the people working here might steal someone's personal information and use it to blackmail them, or maybe just to cause them problems for no good reason at all.

It would be just as just for me to express my concern that you might go into the discord and start hitting on our underage members.

I'm not going to do that though, even though you could. Know why? Because you've never given me any reason to suspect you might do that.

Just as I'm sure that none of the mods in this place has ever done anything to give you just cause to suspect that we might do something sneaky and underhanded just because we could, which seems to be what your concerned about.
The moderator with the power to ban and kick me

That's an erroneous assumption.

does not have to "stand up" to me by strawmanning my points, insulting me throughout the thread, and mentioning me later on in the thread to someone else in order to slander me further.

So what are you saying? You'd rather I just banned you? That's not how we run this place. I'm sure it would be if you were in charge.

Except for extreme circumstances all moderation is the result of the consensus by at least three staff members, and banning someone who's been here for as long as you have would take more than that.

So if you come in here and insult me and/ or the staff, sorry but I'm going to respond to that. We don't deserve that kind of disrespect and distrust.

And like I asked you before (and you never answered me) if you really think that's who you're dealing with here, what are you even doing here?

Especially since all I said is that this new direction could lend itself to potential abuse.

That isn't all you said: Anonymous Journals

Or maybe you're one of those people that doesn't even know when they're being insulting. Or maybe you're just used to people letting you get away with it:

But I will say that the fact that you're trying to trivialize it all now at least shows that some part of your brain realizes you were being unfair.
That is not an attack on you. Quit playing the victim.

On the contrary, you're abusing your power right here in this thread.

How? What am I doing right now that any other member wouldn't be able to do if they felt insulted?

Refusing to kiss your *** is not the same thing as abuse.

I'm not a waiter, this isn't a restaurant, and I'm not going to respond to a bunch of insults and irate and unreasonable complaints by apologizing and offering you free bread sticks.

Sorry.
Whether you consider yourself to be doing me a "service" or not. You're the one who holds the cards. I'm simply refusing to let you bully me into silence.

I love how bullies always accuse other people of being bullies when someone puts them in their place.

I brought this idea up in the staff forums a few months ago, but it never got off the ground. Now I'm curious to see what the members think.

I've been thinking about how it might be helpful for members to have a place where they can journal anonymously

Another forum I was on had something called "Personal Forums" (think that's what it was called) where the hosting member could limit participation to people who they invited. The forums and their content would be invisible to everyone else.

The prospect of creating something like this the usual way (with add-ons and what not) is out of the question here, at least for the foreseeable future, so I have an alternative to suggest: what if we start allowing members to create an additional, anonymous account but restrict use of that account to one thread in Journals?

Here's what I'm talking about:

Say you feel the need to journal about a few personal issues, but would rather not have everyone in the forums know and/or be able to comment about your personal business.

The way this would work would be that you would contact staff to request an additional, anonymous account to be used exclusively in one thread that you would create in the Journals forum.

This thread would be open for posting by invitation only, exclusive to people who you would invite to participate.

Possible rules c/would be:

--- sock account can only be used in Journals, and only in one allowed thread.

--- only people on your "Approved list" can post in your thread. Posts by all other members would be deleted by request of OP without any further action except in cases where it becomes chronic and is obviously intentional.

--- no tagging other members unless they're on your approved list

--- all journal socks would need to have "Anonymous Journal Sock-puppet" in their user title.

--- all other forum rules apply

Questions?

I have a touch of paranoid about me, based on experience in another (moderated) forum. Basically I was stalked and it got worrying. I wasn't sure where the matter might end up but it made me very wary. So something like this is a no no to me. Guaranteed anonymity? Not possible.

I'm not seeing the connection (?)

If anything, this project would add an extra layer of protection against stalking.

Ok, looking back through this thread I can see that the word "Anonymous" is freaking a lot of you out for some reason(also get the feeling thats as far as some if you read, which is a problem since it's the first word in the title)so I changed it to Personal/private forums.

Although I m guessing the damage is already done.

I'm not asking for people to agree with anything here, but I would ask that they a least read the OP before voting.

Maybe there isn't a connection, maybe that's the paranoia. I just would never put such material on the www.
This is only my take, of course. If it's of interest to others go for it.

What material?

Edit: or let's do this: what do you think is being proposed here?
By material, I just mean written content.
Don't think I'm being evasive, but I think you are proposing what is in the OP. If others want that, great, I'm just saying it's of no interest to me. I've been stalked and also had my trivial little blog hacked. I don't need to put myself up for any other online hazards. Not sure exactly what hazard, but I don't want to find out. Once you open this Pandora's box you can't put it back if it goes pear-shaped.

Gee, thanks for clearing that up.

Don't think I'm being evasive, but I think you are proposing what is in the OP.

I think you're being evasive. Actually, I don't believe you actually read the op otherwise you'd be able to explain what's being proposed in your own words.

Well obviously it's of enough interest to you to come in here and misrepresent whats being proposed.

"That Pandora's box".

What Pandora's box?

All I'm suggesting is a place where members can get together with their friends and share whatever's on their minds without having the whole forum watching.

Now you going to tell me you knew that, right? ;)

Disappointed you think I'm lying, but I've read it twice. Member of staff too. Nice. Feel free not to believe that as well. At least another staff member reacted to my post with "Informative." I can see how much you appreciate my opinion so I'll leave it to others to like your idea.

Disappointed you think I'm lying, but I've read it twice.

Then I can't see how you could possibly think that this is going to facilitate stalking. And since you refuse to explain, I can only come to the conclusion that you can't either.

My guess is you saw the word 'anonymous' in the title, made an unpleasant association with the word, it from then on it didn't matter what the OP said.

Feel free not to believe that as well. I can see how much you appreciate my opinion

I appreciate your opinions when they make sense.

But like just about everybody else who's objected in this thread here's what's happening:

It's like we're a bunch of housemates and I just suggested we go get Chinese food.

Now if somebody said we shouldn't get Chinese food because of all the MSG, cool, that's a valid objection.

Somebody else says that we should get pizza because they have a two-for-one coupon, cool: that opinion makes sense too.

But if I say "Hey guys let's get Chinese food", and people started making objections like,
" But none of us even speaks Mandarin!!!" Or,
"Are you crazy?? We can't declare war on China they have nukes!!!!"
Or,

"Oh my god!! What about Godzilla???"
(Which makes even less sense since Godzilla is Japanese not Chinese)

Kind of hard hard not to come to the conclusion that they don't quite understand what I'm proposing.

Now, you apparently made some connection between what's being proposed in the OP and a risk of stalking, but when I ask you to explain said connection you're being evasive and nonsensical.

You supposedly have reasons for objecting but you're refusing to share those in anything but the vaguest and most meaningless terms, so what am I supposed to think?

You refuse to explain where you're coming from but you have no problem dropping turds in here like "Pandora's box", "Pear shaped", "Stalking".

And the problem with this is, most likely other people are going to come in here, read your post, see the word "stalking" and go, "er. . ., stalking??? Why I don't want to be stalked either so I better vote no"!!!!

It's like you don't understand what's being proposed, refuse to talk about it, but want to campaign against it anyway.

What the hell is that about?

For anybody whos LEGITAMATELY interested in understanding what this is about,

ALL I'M PROPOSING IS THAT WE CREATE A SAFE PLACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN HANG OUT WITH THEIR FRIENDS AND SHARE WHATEVERS ON THEIR MINDS WITHOUT HAVING THE WHOLE FORUM WATCHING.

That's it. that's all.

I really don't understand what people are freaking out about.
