That is so cool! But is there a concern there with possible flooding, especially in light of climate change? It looks to be mere feet (or meters) above sea level.

The dyke can withstand floods of 7 meters above normal, the dunes are 20 meters high. The last time sea water was in the town was before I was born (and before the current dyke was built). We are good for at least a few decades.

Naw, I was joking. I figured that's what it was. Here it the states, I've only seen them spelled out. Either that, or they just let you figure it out for yourself once your suspension has sustained damage (as is the case in the parking lot of my apartments and in the parking lot where I work).

First I've ever seen one with an actual picture of a cross section of a speed bump.

Pretty common here...
(Both the signage, and the speed bumps...we have a LOT of traffic furniture in our area to control speed, and low speed limits in suburban streets, sometimes to ridiculous levels imho)

So, here is the street in which my (now) wife and I purchased our first place together, a nice little unit, just to the left of this picture (although we weren't the one closest to street).

Doesn't look like a suburb in a big city, which is one of the reason's we love the area.

Lots of traffic control things in my area, including speed bumps, chicanes, traffic islands and roundabouts.

Not sure how you guys refer to such things, some of that might have been confusing!!??

That warns you of the speed hump. A bit broader and taller than a speed bump. If you go over it at faster than 20 mph you are likely to bottom out your suspension.

They are also called "traffic calming devices" But when I drove on a road with far too may of them I ended up thinking of them as "Traffic enraging devices". I was not speeding but even at 20 kph the jostle can be substantial. I would get madder and madder with each additional hump.

EDIT: Did not see that it was 20 kph! That appears to be a reasonable use of a speed hump. On the street that drove me nuts you would see about 3 more before the top of that hill.

Chicanes are usually reserved for auto racing here. We have speed bumps, and roundabouts are increasing in popularity. Not sure what traffic islands are though. Do they serve margaritas on them?

I am unfamiliar with 'Chicanes' but the other terms are familiar.

Traffic islands are more often referred to as 'The median', particularly the long concrete islands which look like sidewalks slapped between opposite lanes of traffic.

The center of a roundabout would probably not be referred to as a median but could be. It looks exactly like an island, so we'd probably say 'Island'.

A chicane is basically a traffic control point where a kink in the road is deliberately installed (via the use of traffic islands) to force traffic to slow and move through the kink, rather than just drive straight.

A place I lived for 2 years as a kid. Ours was one of the apartments in the building back on the left. In the 70’s there were no houses/condos on the right. Just a dirt field, a train track, and a small cliff between home and the San Francisco Bay. This is the east side of the bay. Pinole, California.
I only learned later how sketchy it was.
