There are some beautiful, awe-inspiring, and mind-blowing images on this thread ~ thanks to everyone for posting them. Here's my favorite:

Vishnu, creating the universe:

I'm doing some work with the theme of the ancient traditions and their deities cast in the expanded paradigm of the modern astronomical cosmos. This pic will be a great addition!

Very beautiful pictures, very dreamlike. I particularly like Deliverance of Peace. It looks like a depiction of Guanyin, the Buddhist Goddess of Compassion. I am curious however; I thought Islam prohibited depictions of religious figures, or does that just apply to The Prophet (pbuh), and of course, Allah?

Hi!

Tho' I am an orthodox Jew, my avatar is a photo of a Samaritan holy site, Givat Olam ("Eternal Hill" or "Everlasting Hill" on Mt. Gerizim, just south of Nablus in Samaria. The name is taken from Deuteronomy 33:15:

And for the chief things of the ancient mountains, and for the precious things of the everlasting hills

u m'rosh hararei kedem u mi'meged givot olam

וּמֵרֹאשׁ הַרְרֵי־קֶדֶם וּמִמֶּגֶד גִּבְעֹות עֹולָֽם

The Samaritans hold this to be site of the Holiest of Holies where (in their tradition) the tabernacle stood & will stand again.

I was there a few weeks ago (it's a national park) and stopped at Givot Olam for a while to run my hands over the flat stone. It was kinda neat. (See the photos & explanations here as well.)
