That title should scare every American to near death! 49%! Are they aware of what's happening in Venezuela? Apparently the USA's Millennial's don't care or are ignorant of the world's newest but failing socialist nation. I think the latter is to blame, ie ignorance. Well, ignorance and not having enough life experience. At least the young can claim ignorance and naivety which is far better than the college professors and other wealthy or rich minions who indoctrinated our young people to Socialism can claim. Using history as a means test Socialism/Communism fails as the best form of government! Its not just millennials who are out to lunch in regard to having a rudimentary knowledge of socialism. Six out of every ten Americans surveyed could not accurately explain 'what is socialism' ? It's pastime for the lazy conservatives like er'...myself to become far more motivated and donate time and money to the cause. Trump was just the beginning. The big guy is trying and we need to support him. So the cause is now the fight to keep America free by supporting our conservative leaders who will in turn defend the kind of world the authors of the constitution and the bill of rights envisioned. at every opportunity! USA a constitutional Democratic republic, its the very least we can do to save freedom and our nation from the progressive liberals.

Neither socialism nor capitalism works as planned because plans must be managed well to be successful. Sadly, we humans have yet to invent a government which hasn't been ineffective, corrupt or both.

The so-called mixed economies are the best we can do for now. Free market capitalism is best used when well-informed consumers, spending their own money, can shop and compare products. Fraud runs amok when those criteria aren't met. For such things as financial services and healthcare the free market fails. It's the wrong tool for the job. Even poorly managed socialism works better.

No. Capitalism is a vile toxin, contagion incarnate. It must not be allowed to stand, less it tempt the weak with its false promises.

We won't agree on this.

Societies are cooperative endeavors. So, having citizens compete for survival within that cooperative effort is classic stupidity. However, a cooperative economy requires intelligent management. We haven't yet invented a government capable of that yet.

Despite its serious flaws, Capitalism has limited value now because, ruled by supply and demand, it steals some power from currently crappy governments.

There is a fairly straight forward, oversimplified reason for this: most millennials have not seen the benefits of capitalism. At least, not yet. I am pretty early in my career and I am beginning to see the benefits of it. I can feel my opinion on this shifting fairly dramatically. I still champion the idea of universal healthcare and fair taxes on big business. With that said, there are dangers to any extreme, extreme left included.

‘Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…’

Winston S Churchill, 11 November 1947

.....and democracy works best in a capitalistic society. Socialism requires strict government oversight--not by elected officials, but by unelected bureaucrats. Only a capitalist society offers the hope to the poor guy just starting out that s/he can become successful and prosperous. Socialism takes that hope pretty much away, and only in a society where that hope is present will the 'little guy' care about his government enough to think his/her vote counts, and actually exercise it.

Of course there is also this: I haven't seen much evidence that socialist nations care much about what the 'little guy' thinks. The powers that be there tell the little guy what s/he SHOULD be thinking, and penalizes any who don't toe the line. 'Political correctness' is considered to be a good thing in socialist societies.

You know....'newspeak?"

It's typical for some in the younger generation to want a free ride or an assisted ride since typically they are younger and are still "paying their dues" to build a life. Data has shown for years that as people get older many people get more conservative.

I think a large part of the problem is too many people see it as an "either/or" question. "Either we will be capitalist or we will be socialist" with no in-between, no middle ground.

Fact is, we've had a mixed economy all along - some of it socialist, some of it capitalist. The main argument is over which parts of the economy should be socialist and which parts should be capitalist. Few people from either side appear to be arguing for total socialism or total capitalism. There will always be the State and the private sector, in one form or another.

These are political decisions often made for reasons of political expediency, sometimes without regard to economic philosophies. As you say, the US is a constitutional democratic republic, and as such, the people have the right to decide these things.

If the people choose socialism, then by the very rules of our republic, that's what they will get. If you don't want them to choose socialism, then the solution might be...offer them something else.

Should we be scared that 49% want socialism over capitalism? Why don't capitalists look at this from a different standpoint? If they were running a business and found that a sizable percentage of the populace hated their product, they might consider that, either they have a crappy product, or they have a PR problem.

Since capitalists believe that their product is just wonderful and that there's nothing wrong with it whatsoever, then they might approach this as a PR problem.

This is well known. There is a saying, attributed variously to several different people and goes back to the early 1800's. Differently phrased, the sum of all such quotes is: if one is not a socialist (or a communist or a democrat or a liberal) before the age of 25 s/he has no heart. If s/he is not a capitalist/republican/conservative after 25, s/he has no head.

I think the poll referenced in the OP is illustrative of this. I do think that Millenials are pushing the age limit, though.

It's presenting a real and serious danger to the country, and as far as I'm concerned a civic and constitutional duty to make sure no socialist ever takes over if people value their individual freedoms and liberties.

These people are not your friends.
