There has recently been an enormous heatwave where I live, which got me thinking...

Is there such a thing as global warming?

And if so, is it due to humans?

I don't know any of the facts and if I did I wouldn't know how to interpret them

Question: What should I believe, if I want to be right?

I have made a poll, but if you vote in it please explain how you voted!

And if you can, please cite an authoritative source or sources

Global warming is real and is happening due to human actions. Go to any IPCC website and you will find it full of scientific evidence for this fact.

Climate change is real and humans are the primary reason for it. While the climate can change naturally over time, the changes we've seen since the industrial revolution have been dramatic.

The NASA website has some fairly easy to digest information about it:

Evidence | Facts – Climate Change: Vital Signs of the Planet

I'll copy/paste the takeaways from the start of the article here for the sake of ease:

  • While Earth’s climate has changed throughout its history, the current warming is happening at a rate not seen in the past 10,000 years.

  • According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), "Since systematic scientific assessments began in the 1970s, the influence of human activity on the warming of the climate system has evolved from theory to established fact."1

  • Scientific information taken from natural sources (such as ice cores, rocks, and tree rings) and from modern equipment (like satellites and instruments) all show the signs of a changing climate.

  • From global temperature rise to melting ice sheets, the evidence of a warming planet abounds.

Only denied by idiots (or those with an agenda such as a CEO of an oil company), but it'll kill us indiscriminately.

NASA:

"It’s important to remember that the focus of scientists is always on the evidence, not on opinions. Scientific evidence continues to show that human activities (primarily due to the human burning of fossil fuels) have warmed Earth’s surface and its ocean basins, which in turn have continued to impact Earth’s climate. This is based on the weight of over a century of scientific evidence forming the structural backbone of the science and technology underpinning much of our civilization today."

Here is a way to get past fake websites.
Search climate change in Google scholar.

That's what I thought

Obviously not too many idiots on RF as everyone seems to be unanimously in favour of it being a thing

I was hoping for more of a debate, not a consensus :(

Cheer up, there's deniers here on RF, the usual suspects. There's always been climate change, it's just weather, Man doesn't have that level of influence (read that one just the other day), blah blah blah...

Three of us!

Did you guys google "Climate change evidence" too? ;)

Honestly there's enough written about it that picking the first reliable source just saves time. It's also a good example of why climate change deniers must have it rough. You have to scroll past so many facts before you get to anything that supports your view.

Global warming is not something you purely measure locally, so you could have a heatwave even if global warming weren't the case.

It is based on a long range of observations from a lot of different fields of science, it is something that will "slowly" start to affect things on a gradual scale and could spiral out of control as one thing could lead to another.

If you just watch this one, and that is just one potential problem. Normally people talk about C02 when its global warming, methane is around 30 times better at trapping heat, so definitely not something we want to fill the atmosphere with.

As a quick experiment, I just googled "climate change isn't happening" and "climate change hoax." I still got bombarded with facts!

Is it an algorithm thing? Would google bring up more climate change denial websites if my search history included more Alex Jones?

OP used the term “global warming” while the better term would be anthropomorphic climate change. Yes, human activity can affect climate. The more prescient question would be to what extent human activity affects climate. That question is very debatable.

That's the question. There has been and probably will be natural climate change, but to what extent do humans have in controlling or slowing the inevitable. Science has shown us the affect we have had and how to at least slow it down.
