Pope "ashamed, outraged" by Irish sexual abuse

I approve of the Pope's reactions. I'm just exhausted and embarrassed over this whole thing.

If it is any consolation I think the current archbishop of Dublin has handled himself exceptionally well throughout. If I were a Catholic I would draw hope from his behaviour.

You just reminded me that you are from Ireland. Thanks for that tid-bit and I hope his behaviour is a sign of things to come.

I'll gladly take the copout route on this one.

I have no further interest beyond what I already showed to explain or defend the complexity of the issue. I can only do my part in trying to make things better.

I am ashamed and outraged about this as well along with our beloved Pope Benedict XVI. Abuse should never happen and when it does, it does not need to be covered up! That said, here is an informational piece about the scandal of sexual abuse in the Church.

Q&A: Understanding the Priest Scandal (This Rock: November 2002)

That said, I'm not sure but I think that the rate of sexual abuse in Protestant and other churches is just as high as in the Catholic Church. That, of course, does not excuse such behavior but it is important to realize that this is not just a Catholic problem.

Friends,

Though am not a catholic still responding as to discuss the issue in true spirit being a human problem and not just catholic or protestant etc. It will surely be there in other places but not reported.

The problem WAS, IS and WILL BE there.
It is natural as to err is human.
Who has a solution?
The Pope?
The Followers?

Does anyone have a WAY?

Its so weird that the Catholic Church has been slammed all at once. All over the country here there have been sexual abuse claims dating back as far as 20 years.

I wonder why everyone has decided to hammer the church now? It must be hurting their image severely.

However, to take something from discussions with Islam, the people must be criticised and not the church itself. There are hundreds of millions of catholics, why should the sick actions of less than 5% tarnish the reputation of the rest? Much like the assumption that because the Taliban are radicals that the rest of Islam is radical, i think that the cases i talk about are unfair on the church.

Does it make you at all ashamed to try to answer the scandal by trying to deflect attention to gay men in general and to other churches?

They're as concerned about whether nuns in the US should be required to wear traditional habit as they are whether children of their congregation are being sexually solicited.

That's not bankrupting the church, though.

With respect to the OP -

One priest admitted abusing more than 100 children. Another said he had abused children every two weeks for over 25 years.

The Murphy Report came six months after the release of a similarly damning and even more graphic report about floggings, slave labor and gang rape in Ireland's now defunct Church-run industrial and reform schools in the 20th century.
That report also accused state officials and police of abetting a cover-up, further eroding the moral authority of an institution that dominated Irish life for centuries.

Victor, do you think the Pope's acknowledgemt of this issue is significant?
Well...he is doing more then acknowledging the issue; he's upset and wants to fix the issue altogether. But yes, his reaction is important for us catholics.

Victor, what can the Pope do about this issue? Is there a solution to restore the Churches position?
