Screw it. No one would be interested to see my desktop anyway. It's just a bunch of
icons of random stuff I installed, half of which I don't even know what it is, and word
documents I've saved to my desktop. The background is Sherlock Holmes. :D I can
actually find that pic-cha and post it, which I will do right now...

Sorry it's so big...

Okay, I made sure to click my taskbar up so you could see that this is indeed my desktop and not just a wallpaper image ;) I have no icons. I have a dock.

So far I think I win for a clean desktop. :p Doesn't anyone else use a dock instead of desktop icons?

A dock... as in a laptop docking station?

I'm not sure what relevance that would have for this, and if you're talking about something else, I wouldn't know what it is.

Is this some sort of Vista/Windows 7 thing? I'm an XP guy myself.

Objectdock runs on XP as well. If you're interested go here: Stardock ObjectDock

I did another snapshot of my desktop, this time while hovering over my dock so you can see it.

It's nice. You can customize your dock anyway you like...colors, designs, separators. You can put all your icons onto it and clean up your desktop. You can have it attached to top, bottom, or either side and you just take your cursor over to it and it pops out for you and goes back when you pull away. There's also many other features Stardock has that can affect your windows as well.

edit: and yes...I have a ton of games on there :p ...not that I play them all...just kind of collect and never get rid of :p

Oh... okay. That's what that is. I've seen people use similar features on their Macs and thought to myself "gee, that looks annoying. I'm glad I have a PC." :D

Annoying? How? It's only there when you want it to show. And Objectdock is a PC thing. Personally, a desktop cluttered with icons looks messy to me, so I like it.

I guess I just prefer random access to sequential access.

I like having icons on my desktop even if I don't use them very often. For instance, if you look back at my screen shot, I've got a clump of icons off at the top right for my GPS/APRS/ham radio stuff. I don't use them that often, but when I do, I like to find them quickly. But it'd be a pain in the butt to have to scroll past them (or the bunches of my other infrequently-used but still handy icons) any time I wanted to open iTunes or something. And if I put them at one end of the list, then I'd have to flip past all my more commonly used icons to get to them when I do need them.

Basically, I like to go straight to the thing I'm interested in, not flip through a list of icons mentally going "no, no, no, no, no, no, yes". Even if it's relatively quick to do it, it's still going to be slower than a single click.

I cant stand overly anal cleanliness, personally....
not accusing you of anything...

but when I hear people complaining about cluttered desktops, I just think there's more to life
